Job Summary Location: This is a primarily remote position reporting to an office roughly once every 6 weeks, in addition to any required in-person court appearances. Job Type: Full time. Position Summary Uses advanced specialized knowledge to handle complex to highly complex litigation of cases with unlimited exposure where the insured or the Company is a defendant. Controls all aspects of litigation, including trial preparation, discovery, negotiation, presentation and appeals from District to Circuit Court. Exercises discretion and judgment with minimal supervision. Supports duty with a monthly cap on new case assignments. Key Responsibilities Case Analysis and Preparation Analyzes, files, reviews allegations and renders legal opinions to Claims personnel regarding evaluation and disposition of injury cases. Prepares responses to civil complaints, files and answers motions when questions of law or liability are disputed. Conducts discovery, including depositions, interrogatories and requests for admission. Reviews insurance policy and relevant documents. Selects investigators and arranges subpoenas and summonses. Files additional motions as facts and timing warrant. Reviews medical data, consults with medical and accident reconstruction specialists. Evaluates settlement options. Prepares uninsured/underinsured motorist cases for trial or arbitration. Submits pre‑trial statements and participates in pre‑trial hearings. Trial and Defense Prepares case for trial, develops strategy. Conducts defense, delivers opening, examines, cross‑examines witnesses, argues motions, confers with judges, delivers closing arguments. Prepares trial briefs. Summaries for Case Evaluation Tribunal. Evaluates award and recommends acceptance or proceeding to trial. Client Communications and Negotiations Keeps client advised of case status and consults with third‑party clients. Advises insured on retention of counsel for over‑limit judgments. Negotiates pre‑trial settlements. Applies cost/benefit considerations. Advises on payment of claims. Co‑ordinates trial or settlement activity with co‑counsel. Recommends appeals to the Appeals Committee. Legal Advice and Guidance Renders legal advice and opinions on coverage, liability and damages. Conducts examinations under oath. Participates in Claims Legal Council Program. Participates in office committees. Mentors less experienced attorneys. Supervisory Responsibilities None. Qualifications Education: Juris Doctor degree or graduate of an accredited law school; member of the State Bar of applicable state. Experience: Minimum five years as a licensed attorney in personal injury, no‑fault or insurance litigation; OR three years as an associate attorney at ACG Staff Counsel with yearly performance reviews of overall fully met expectations or higher. Knowledge of: Civil law, judicial procedures, rules of evidence, legal research, discovery methods, mediation, claims procedures, tort liability law, insurance law, policies for all lines of coverage, Michigan Court Rules, standard jury instructions, and professional ethics relating to house counsel and insured. Skills and abilities: Effective communication, analytical presentation, utilization of litigation management systems. Preferred: Trial experience; experience in first‑party no‑fault or auto insurance defense litigation; knowledge of defense trial practice; experience in staff counsel operations; high performance metrics; familiarity with Michigan No‑Fault Act and case law.
