Job description

Position Description:

The University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine seeks an accomplished and visionary educational leader to serve as Director of the Office of Consultation and Research in Medical Education (OCRME). Reporting directly to the Associate Dean for Medical Education Integration and Innovation, the Director provides strategic leadership for medical education research, faculty development, educational innovation, assessment, and program evaluation across the Carver College of Medicine (CCOM) and the University of Iowa Health Care (UI Health Care) enterprise.



The Director will lead a multidisciplinary office that partners with faculty, departments, educational programs, and institutional leaders to advance excellence in medical education through evidence-based educational practices, scholarship, and continuous quality improvement. The Director will play a central leadership role in institutional accreditation activities, support undergraduate and graduate medical education programs, and help build a culture of educational excellence throughout the academic health system.



A major responsibility of this position will be co-leading the development of a UI Health Care Academy of Medical Educators, creating a community of educational leaders dedicated to advancing teaching excellence, educational scholarship, mentoring, and faculty development across the health sciences.



Other primary responsibilities will include the following:



Strategic Leadership




  • Provide strategic vision and leadership for OCRME in support of the educational missions of the CCOM and UI Health Care.

  • Develop long-term strategic priorities that promote innovation, educational excellence, and scholarly activity.

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to college and health system leadership on educational initiatives and policy.

  • Identify institutional needs and develop responsive educational programs and services.



Faculty Development




  • Lead the design, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive faculty development initiatives ( Teaching Scholars and Faculty development series) for educators across undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education.

  • Develop innovative programming focused on teaching excellence, learner assessment, educational leadership, curriculum design, mentoring, and educational scholarship.

  • Collaborate with departments and educational programs to enhance educator effectiveness across the health system.

  • Help Co-lead (in partnership with the Associate Dean for Medical Education Integration and Innovation) the development and implementation of a University of Iowa Health Care Academy of Medical Educators, establishing a sustainable infrastructure that recognizes, supports, and advances excellence in teaching and educational leadership across the enterprise.



Accreditation and Continuous Quality Improvement




  • Provide institutional leadership and consultation for LCME accreditation activities, including self-study processes, continuous quality improvement initiatives, accreditation reporting, and documentation.

  • Collaborate with Graduate Medical Education leadership to support ACGME accreditation, program evaluation, educational quality improvement, and faculty development initiatives.

  • Develop systems that promote continuous educational quality improvement across undergraduate and graduate medical education programs.



Educational Research and Scholarship




  • Foster a culture of educational scholarship throughout the CCOM.

  • Lead and collaborate on educational research, program evaluation, learner assessment, and outcomes research.

  • Provide consultation to faculty on educational research design, qualitative and quantitative methodologies, measurement, and statistical analysis.

  • Pursue external funding to support educational innovation and research initiatives.

  • Mentor faculty, trainees, and staff engaged in educational scholarship.



Educational Consultation




  • Partner with faculty and academic leaders to implement evidence-based educational practices.

  • Provide consultation in curriculum design, instructional methods, learner assessment, educational technology, organizational development, and program evaluation.

  • Support educational innovation across undergraduate, graduate, and interprofessional education programs.



Administrative Leadership




  • Direct the daily operations of OCRME.

  • Supervise faculty and professional staff with expertise in educational research, assessment, evaluation, faculty development, instructional design, and data analytics.

  • Develop and manage the office budget.

  • Establish priorities, evaluate program effectiveness, and ensure efficient utilization of resources.

  • Oversee OCRME services and ensure alignment with institutional strategic priorities.



Medical Education




  • Provide leadership for the Masters in Medical Education and other graduate educational programs administered through OCRME.

  • Teach, mentor, and advise graduate students.

  • Support curriculum development and program assessment.



Institutional Service




  • Serve on the Medical Education Council and other institutional committees supporting the educational mission.

  • Collaborate with educational leaders across the CCOM and UI Health Care.

  • Represent the institution in regional and national organizations focused on medical and health professions education.

  • Promote collaboration across colleges, departments, and clinical programs to strengthen educational quality and innovation.



This position requires an on-site presence. The percent effort for this position is negotiable between the range of .5FTE to a fulltime FTE. Candidates could become a member of one or more of several academic departments upon appointment. Appointment is anticipated at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor (tenure or non-tenure track), commensurate with qualifications.

Education Requirement:
  • PhD, MD, EdD, or equivalent doctoral degree, preferably in education, educational psychology, medical education, health professions education, or a related field.

Required Qualifications:
  • Qualifications that meet the requirements for a faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.

  • Minimum of five years of experience teaching in academic or professional development settings.

  • Record of scholarly achievement, including peer-reviewed publications and presentations in health professions education.

  • Demonstrated excellence in leadership, communication, collaboration, and team building.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience securing external funding or educational grants.

  • Experience supervising faculty and/or professional staff.

  • Leadership experience at the institutional level and/or within regional or national professional organizations.

  • Experience supporting or leading LCME and/or ACGME accreditation activities, including continuous quality improvement, self-study preparation, accreditation reporting, and educational program evaluation.

  • Experience designing and implementing faculty development programs.

  • Experience leading organizational change and educational innovation.
