Job description

Are you an experienced family law attorney who has reached the point where you want more from your career—but less from your calendar?

Maybe you're a solo practitioner who is tired of being the attorney, business owner, marketer, bill collector, HR manager, IT department, and everything in between.

Maybe you're a junior partner who has built a successful practice but is tired of the relentless workload and the pressure of keeping everything running.

Maybe you're simply ready for a change—an opportunity to practice law, mentor attorneys, help build something exciting, and have a life outside of your law practice.

We may be looking for you.

Wheeler Law PLLC is a growing law firm with an established immigration practice and a rapidly expanding family law department. We are looking for an experienced Managing Family Law Attorney to help us take this department to the next level.

This isn't a traditional law firm leadership role.

We don't want someone who is afraid to challenge the way things have always been done. We want someone who sees inefficiency and asks,

"Why are we doing it this way?"

We want someone who is excited about technology, innovation, mentorship, and building a better way to practice law.

Most importantly, we want someone who wants to practice law without having to carry the entire business on their back.

As the Managing Family Law Attorney, you will play a key role in shaping and growing our family law department while continuing to practice law.

Your role will include:

  • Managing a caseload of family law matters, with an emphasis on high-quality advocacy and client service.

  • Mentoring and developing junior family law attorneys and legal paraprofessionals.

  • Providing strategic guidance on complex family law matters.

  • Reviewing pleadings, motions, discovery, and other substantive work product.

  • Assisting with litigation strategy and case development.

  • Helping establish and improve systems, workflows, and processes within the family law department.

  • Identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, profitability, and the client experience.

  • Participating in hiring, training, and development of the family law team.

  • Helping shape the vision and growth strategy of a rapidly expanding department.

  • Being a leader who isn't afraid to experiment, challenge assumptions, and try something new.

  • Collaborating with firm leadership to build a modern, efficient, and sustainable family law practice.

What You Won't Have to Do

  • You won't have to build the business from scratch.

  • You won't have to figure out payroll.

  • You won't have to manage every administrative task.

  • You won't have to spend your evenings worrying about whether the firm's bills got paid.

  • You won't have to do everything yourself.

That's our job.

Your job is to be an excellent attorney, leader, mentor, and advocate—and to help us build an exceptional family law department.

Who We're Looking For

We're looking for an attorney who is experienced, enterprising, curious, and ready for something different.

You might be a great fit if:

  • You've been practicing family law for several years and have significant litigation experience.

  • You currently run your own practice and are tired of spending as much time running the business as practicing law.

  • You're a partner or senior associate who wants more leadership opportunities without sacrificing your entire life to the practice.

  • You enjoy mentoring younger attorneys and helping others become better lawyers.

  • You understand that being a great attorney and running a great law firm are two different skill sets.

  • You're comfortable taking ownership and making decisions.

  • You're not afraid to challenge the status quo.

  • You are willing to embrace technology and new approaches to practicing law.

  • You care about efficiency—but never at the expense of client outcomes.

  • You want to be part of building something rather than simply maintaining the status quo.

  • You value collaboration over ego.

  • You want a career that allows you to be successful and have a life outside of work.

Our Philosophy

  • We believe the legal industry can—and should—be better.

  • Better systems.

  • Better communication.

  • Better technology.

  • Better client experiences.

  • Better work-life balance for attorneys and staff.

We believe innovation and efficiency should make us better lawyers, not simply busier lawyers.

We're not interested in doing things a certain way simply because "that's how law firms have always done it."

  • If there is a better way, we want to find it.

  • If technology can eliminate unnecessary work, we want to use it.

  • If a process is inefficient, we want to change it.

  • If a junior attorney has a better idea, we want to hear it.

  • And if something isn't working, we want someone willing to say so.

Why Join Us?

Because you can have a meaningful leadership role without having to sacrifice your entire life to get it.

You'll have the opportunity to:

  • Help build a family law department from the ground up.

  • Work alongside a team that values innovation and continuous improvement.

  • Mentor and develop other attorneys.

  • Influence how the department operates and grows.

  • Practice meaningful family law.

  • Have access to the infrastructure and support of an established firm.

  • Be part of a firm that is actively investing in technology, systems, and growth.

  • Enjoy a healthier approach to practicing law.

  • Help create the kind of law firm you wish existed when you started practicing.

The Opportunity

This is an opportunity for someone who is thinking:

"I still love practicing law. I'm just tired of everything that comes with running a law firm."

Or:

"I have more to offer than billing hours, but I don't want to work 70 hours a week to prove it."

Or:

"I want to build something exciting, mentor other attorneys, and have a seat at the table—but I also want to have a life."

If that sounds like you, we'd love to meet you.

Come help us build the future of family law.

Compensation:

$130,000 - $180,000 yearly

Responsibilities:
  • Active license to practice law in Arizona and membership in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of Arizona family law experience, including litigation.

  • Strong knowledge of the Arizona Rules of Family Law Procedure, Arizona Revised Statutes, and local court rules.

  • Experience managing a family law caseload independently from initial consultation through resolution.

  • Excellent legal writing, oral advocacy, negotiation, and courtroom skills.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities.

  • Exceptional client service, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

  • Spanish language proficiency is preferred, but not required.

Qualifications:
  • Candidates should be great negotiators and communicators, specifically in situations when emotions and stress are high
  • Active Member of the Arizona State Bar.

  • At least 3+ years of experience working in a law firm on family law issues.
