"I know more about waterproofing membranes than I ever planned to."
I hear some version of that from nearly every construction defect lawyer I speak to. It's usually said with a smile. It's also why good CD lawyers are hard to find and worth a lot to the right firm.
I'm Ryan Jaiswal at Distinct Recruitment. I'm hiring a construction defect defense attorney for a Florida insurance defense firm that wants to add a CD lawyer to its Boca Raton team.
Inside the role
• Defending general contractors, subcontractors and design professionals
• High rise condos, HOAs and commercial projects across South Florida
• Multiparty cases with tenders, cross claims and plenty of experts
• Depositions, mediations and trial preparation, with more courtroom work as you earn it
The package
• Hybrid to start, splitting the week between home and the Boca office, with the option to go remote down the line
• 1,900 billable hours
• $125,000 to $180,000, depending on experience. Deliberately broad, so it fits a sharp 2nd year through to counsel
• Florida Bar required
Background you'll need
• 2+ years defending construction defect claims. It's a specialist seat, so prior CD work is essential
• Confidence with plans, expert reports and repair estimates
• The patience to steer a dozen parties towards a sensible result
The longer view
The real question with any move is where it leads. Associates here who handle their files well and build relationships with the adjusters get more responsibility. Then they get the chance to develop business of their own. Nobody pretends it happens overnight. But the path is talked about openly, so you're not left guessing at review time.
