Description :

To significantly contribute to the development of a healthy, safe, and caring environment by advancing the understanding of the emotional and social development of children and the influences of family, community, and cultural differences on student success and by implementing effective intervention strategies

Job Summary :

Responsibilities and Essential Functions :

Ensure the safety of students.

Assessment of Student, Family, and School Needs : Effectively and appropriately assess and address the needs, characteristics and interactions of students, families, LEA personnel and community.

Performs caseworker service with individual students to correct those personal, social or emotional maladjustments related to their educational and social progress.

Makes home visits for the purpose of gathering helpful information on a student's background.

Administer Developmental Assets Survey & progress monitoring surveys to students and record individual student results.

Develops long-term and short-term intervention plans consistent with curriculum; students' needs, strengths, diversity and life experiences;

and social and emotional factors.

Uses a variety of appropriate formal and informal tools and techniques including observations and interviews to evaluate the progress and performance of students and families

Direct Services / Service Delivery : Uses knowledge and understanding of the reciprocal influences of home, school, and community to intervene for student success via such practices as assessment, crisis intervention, home visits, conflict resolution, individual and group counseling, consultation, program development, dropout prevention and coordination of school and community services.

Performs casework service with parents to increase the parents' understanding, their constructive participation in resolving their child's problems, and their knowledge and use of appropriate resources available.

Supervises the referral of students to, and serves as liaison with, such outside agencies as Children Services, Juvenile Court, etc. as appropriate.

Develops and provides training and educational programs that address the goals and mission of the educational institution

Provides services to students in ways that build upon individual strengths and offers students maximum opportunities to participate in the planning and direction of their own learning experience.

Advocacy : Advocates for appropriate services for students and their families.

Serves on multidisciplinary team(s) to address needs of students with or without disabilities to assure implementation of appropriate services, programming and / or placement.

Advocates and facilitates change that effectively responds to the needs of students, families, and school systems using appropriate statutes, case law, policies, and procedures

Assists students and their families to gain access to formal and informal community resources

Utilizes research and technologies to assist students, families, schools, and communities

Consultation and Collaboration : Consults and collaborates with stakeholders on behalf of students and their families.

Consults on such issues as attendance, confidentiality, ethnicity and diversity, mental health, behavior management, discipline, crisis intervention and child abuse and neglect

Initiates and supports activities to overcome institutional barriers and gaps in services as leaders and members of interdisciplinary teams with the unique contribution of bringing the home, school and community perspective to the interdisciplinary process

Promotes collaboration among community health and mental health service providers and facilitates student access to these services

Works closely with building administration to meet the individual needs of students within the building and provide support wherever is needed

Serves as liaison between home and school when considerable follow-up is necessary, as in welfare cases, foster home children, and disadvantaged students.

Helps to build effective school-community teams and orients community providers to school climate, culture and structure and to the laws and regulations governing practice in educational settings

Supports McKinney-Vento Coordinator in identifying and coordinating services for homeless students

Program Planning, Implementation and Evaluation : Effectively plans, implements and evaluates programs that promote student and family success.

Plans school and / or system-wide programs to promote a safe, healthy, caring school climate that fosters academic success

Assists the school and community in planning programs that alleviate situations which may interfere with the learning process of students

Accountability : Advocates, facilitates, and contributes to building accountability for outcomes aligned with local, state, and federal policies and guidelines.

Keeps sufficient records of cases for use by school staff members and outside agencies when appropriate.

Maintains current knowledge of and abides by federal and state laws and regulations with emphasis on persons with disabilities, child welfare, mental health, confidentiality, and student and parent rights

Organizes time, resources, energy, and workload in order to meet responsibilities

Participates in appropriate professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills

Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required

Attendance : Supports building and district to improve student attendance and meet attendance law requirements.

Creates Absence Intervention Plans and facilitates meetings in regards to improving student attendance

Tracks student attendance on a daily basis and creates supports to improve student attendance when barriers arise

Collaborates with local courts and other local agencies to improve student attendance

Communicates attendance issues / needs effectively with building / district administration

Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Services or the Superintendent

Professional Responsibilities :

Adhere to all standards established by the Ohio Department of Education for Licensed Educators.

Maintain good attendance and punctuality.

Refer suspected cases of child abuse immediately to the appropriate child protective services / law enforcement agency as mandated by state law and Board of Education policy.

Ability to work effectively with others.

Establish and maintain cooperative relationships.

Interact in a positive manner with staff, students and parents

Ability to work in a team environment.

Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude and conversation.

Qualifications :

Must have a Bachelor's Degree in applicable field such as education or social services.

Certificate, license, or other legal credential preferred.

Degree(s) required and area of major study.

Kind and amount of prior job experience required.

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
