Position Summary
The Operations Manager Transportation & Logistics will oversee daily terminal operations, lead a cross-functional team, and ensure the efficient, compliant movement of freight. This role is responsible for driving process improvements, managing key performance indicators (KPIs), and collaborating with maintenance, safety, and customer service to deliver exceptional service while optimizing cost-to-serve.
Key Responsibilities
Terminal Leadership & Team Management
- Supervise dispatchers, drivers, warehouse staff, and support personnel.
- Recruit, train, coach, and develop high-performance teams; conduct regular performance reviews.
- Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Operational Oversight
Manage daily load planning, driver scheduling, and yard operations to meet service and productivity goals.Monitor on-time pickups / deliveries, dwell times, and equipment utilization; implement corrective actions when needed.Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and company policies; lead terminal safety audits and investigations.Process Improvement & Cost Control
Identify opportunities to streamline workflows, reduce deadhead miles, and lower operating costs.Apply Lean or Six Sigma principles to improve dispatch, yard management, and driver utilization.Develop and track KPIs (e.g., cost per mile, on-time percentage, driver productivity) and present actionable insights to leadership.Customer & Stakeholder Engagement
Serve as the primary point of escalation for customer issues, providing proactive updates and resolution plans.Collaborate with Sales and Customer Service teams to align operational capabilities with customer expectations.Build and maintain strong relationships with vendors, brokers, and service providers.Financial & Administrative Duties
Prepare and manage the terminal's operating budget; monitor labor, fuel, and maintenance expenses.Oversee payroll accuracy for terminal personnel and drivers.Maintain accurate records within TMS, yard management, and compliance systems.Qualifications
Experience : 5+ years in transportation / logistics operations, including 2+ years in a management role at a terminal level within the food-grade tanker or bulk liquid transportation industry.Industry Knowledge : Familiarity with bulk liquid tank operations.Technical Skills : Proficient with Transportation Management Systems (TMS), yard management software, and Microsoft Office.Leadership : Strong people-management skills with a track record of team development and accountability.Analytical Ability : Skilled in data analysis and KPI reporting; able to translate metrics into operational improvements.Communication : Excellent verbal and written communication skills; adept at stakeholder engagement.Compliance : In-depth knowledge of DOT / FMCSA regulations, Hours of Service (HOS) rules, and OSHA safety standards.Work Environment
