Job Summary

The Laboratory Support Technician supports the Immunogenetics & Transplantation Laboratory (ITL) by providing administrative services to clients and performing technical tasks that do not require a license.

Client services include monitoring and responding to requests for information or assistance; auditing data records; answering telephone calls and filing and faxing reports.

The position is also responsible for reagent, supply and instrument management and procuring and coordinating repairs and other required services.

Laboratory functions include log-in samples; order tests using requisition forms, protocols, APeX, verbal orders and / or e-mail correspondence;

manage sample inventory system (store and retrieve samples); coordinate and maintain records of laboratory equipment maintenance and perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

The position will typically handle blood specimens collected in various color tubes, tissues samples (spleen and lymph nodes), and buccal swabs.

Department Description

The mission of the UCSF Department of Surgery is threefold : to develop the next generation of leaders in surgery; to provide outstanding quality clinical care that is cost effective, yet compassionate;

and to make significant advances in scientific knowledge and clinical practice through basic and clinical research. The Department is comprised of multiple divisions and sections and our surgeons provide care at locations throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.

Our Residents and Fellows also play a critical role in Department's success. The Department of Surgery Chair's Office is an extremely high profile, fast paced environment with a very diverse range of contacts and needs which require an immediate and accurate response, handled with confidentiality, and while staying compliant.

The Chair's Office is responsible for management, direction and oversight of over 400 faculty (clinical and research), trainees and staff personnel.

Required Qualifications

Graduation from college with a major in an applicable natural science; or two years of college courses in the natural sciences plus two years of applicable experience;

or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Accurate and be able to process multiple samples without switches.
  • Be able to work with computers.
  • Must be effective as a member of a team.
  • Proven record of being reliable and be able to multitask.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Tidy and orderly.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant laboratory experience and / or a degree in life science or related course.
  • Experience working in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Experience in ordering and maintaining supplies and equipment, and keeping inventory records.
