Job description

Associate Vice President for University Advancement

Leads the strategy behind marketing and communication efforts to support the University Advancement's engagement strategies. The Associate VP will develop and implement marketing and communication plans aligned with the Wake Forest University brand and University-wide initiatives. The Associate VP will collaborate with the University Marketing and Communications team to maximize University-wide and Advancement-specific resources.

Essential Functions :

  • Serves as a member of University Advancement's senior leadership team, providing strategic advice and counsel to the Senior Vice President for Advancement and Advancement colleagues.
  • Serves as University Advancement's primary liaison with University Marketing and Communications (UMC) and serves as a member of the University's Executive Marketing Council.
  • Creates, develops and executes strategic communication and marketing plans supporting Wake Forest University's engagement strategies.
  • Develops the University Advancement marketing and communication team and manages relationships with external vendors to provide expertise and capacity to marketing efforts.
  • Oversees production and distribution of content about University Advancement projects and initiatives, including but not limited to website content, print pieces, proposals, newsletters, video production, mass emails and other digital promotional efforts including social media content.
  • Serves as the primary point of contact for University Advancement communication needs and engages in project management responsibilities for the benefit of the University Advancement marketing team.
  • Serves as the editorial lead and thematic decision maker for the Wake Forest Magazine, providing oversight to the editorial team to help guide and steward the development and production of the magazine, to work in harmony within University Advancement's strategic storytelling apparatus.
  • Cultivates relationships with key audiences and collaborates on efforts related to communication to key Advancement constituencies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities :

  • Bachelor's degree and 15+ years of experience in integrated marketing, executive communications or equivalent education and related training.
  • Proven experience in leading, developing, and managing communications teams and complex projects.
  • A foundational understanding of the intersection of marketing, public relations, digital platforms, and event management as well as competence in marketing and communication strategy.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of fundraising principles and practices as well as the ability to think strategically about donor and prospect communications and engage with and leverage marketing persona data.
  • Ability to convey institutional themes in a powerful, engaging way.
  • Ability to design, pursue, and complete goal-oriented projects in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks, meet deadlines and manage conflicting priorities.
  • Ability to research and organize information and data with accuracy and attention to detail and solve problems.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends and to travel as necessary. Should be able to meet the requirements of the University's automobile policy.
  • Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities :

  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience working in higher education environment preferred.
  • Strong understanding of the intersection of communication, marketing and brand management with philanthropy and engagement within a university setting.
  • Prior experience with developing marketing and communication plans in capital campaigns.
  • A track record as a thought-leader or regular presenter in industry forums on topics of relevance to the field of marketing and brand management.
  • Ability to translate ideas and understand limitations in a variety of creative applications.
  • Accountabilities :

    Responsible for overseeing budgets of comprehensive marketing and communication operations.

    Directly supervises the Senior Managing Editor, Wake Forest Magazine, Writer, Project Manager, Digital Content Creator, a Graphic Designer and a Campaign Writer.

    Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions :

    Sedentary work primarily involving sitting / standing; communicating with others to exchange information; repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and / or fingers; and assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned. No adverse environmental conditions expected.
