Stanford University is seeking an Associate Director and Chief Operating Officer for the Beckman Center for Molecular and Genetic Medicine, a basic sciences research center at the School of Medicine, to oversee the administrative and business operations-related functions for all programs supported by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation. The position reports to the Beckman Center director. Programs supported include the operations of four large fee-for-service centers providing high-tech support in imaging, cell sorting, protein and nucleic acid chemistry, and bioinformatics to hundreds of researchers across the university. In addition, the Beckman Center sponsors multiple educational programs including large research symposiums, seminars, and workshops, faculty recruitment funding, and seed grants to interdisciplinary researchers at Stanford. The ideal candidate should have a background in science, a master’s degree in business or related degree, extensive financial and management experience and skills, and excellent written and verbal communications, as well as organizational and planning skills.

Duties include

  • Oversee all financial, administrative, and business planning in support of the mission and goals of the Beckman Center. Hire, train, mentor, and retain managerial staff to oversee administrative operations of all Beckman Center programs. Direct reports include a business operations manager and a program and events manager (Foundation programs). Each manager, in turn, supervises one full-time staff member.
  • Work with the business operations manager to ensure the efficient handling of service center financial operations, including billing and collections, totaling more than $5.8 million annually for hundreds of service center users across the university, as well as external customers. Work with the program and events manager to ensure the timely planning and execution of large-scale research symposiums, seminars and workshops, Foundation site visits, external reviews of the Center, and publication of quarterly newsletters and annual reports. Oversee the application and review process for the Technology Development Seed Grant Program, and provide funding for the Medical Scholars, which supports medical students doing translational research.
  • Assemble, execute, and oversee an annual Beckman Center budget of $11.4 million from all sources. Work with the business operations manager and service center directors to set revenue targets for the service centers, establish pricing for services, and determine all relevant costs. Approve all proposed budgets and subsidies for the service centers. Work with the program and events manager to establish budgets and approve funding for all Foundation programs including seminars, symposiums, the seed grant program, faculty recruitment, and medical scholars program. Work with the Dean’s Office to establish and maintain salary funding to support the Beckman Center administrative staff.
  • Work closely with the service center directors to help promote the director’s scientific goals. In conjunction with the business operations manager, produce long-range business strategies and financial plans that will assist in achieving those goals and that are financially sustainable. Act as the administrative coordinator / facilitator for all service center mergers, expansions, and renovations.
  • Manage and coordinate grants and contracts made to the Beckman Center for new or replacement service center equipment. Review and approve cost-sharing requests for S10 NIH Shared Equipment grant applications and the university’s Community of Shared Research Platforms (c-ShaRP) grants. Ensure compliance with institutional and external requirements.
  • Complete annual performance appraisals and salary setting for all direct reports. Consult with the Beckman enter director for the purpose of assessing service center accomplishments and salary setting for the service center directors. Act as administrative coordinator, in consultation with the Beckman Center director and service center advisory committees, for the replacement, recruitment and hire of new service center directors.
  • Act as administrative representative for the Beckman Center on the School of Medicine Service Center Advisory Committee, and other university committees as need. Interface with the offices of the associate deans for research, finance, and budget to promote the operational needs of the service centers and Foundation Programs sponsored by the Beckman Center. Participate as a member of each of the service center advisory committees.
  • Ensure the efficient, flexible, and responsive quality of the work of remote employees that meets all administrative and operational goals.
  • Work with the Beckman Center director, department chairs, and appropriate laboratory managers to develop and implement an emergency building management system for the Beckman Center.
  • Other duties may also be assigned.
  • DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS :

    Background in science, master’s degree in business or related field, extensive financial and management experience and skills, and excellent written and verbal communications, organizational and planning skills.

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED) :

    Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience in administrative and financial management, or combination of education and relevant experience.

  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently sitting.

  • The expected pay range for this position is $160,294 to $199,273 per annum.
