Purpose
TheTraffic Sign Worker is responsible for maintaining, installing, and replacingtraffic control signs within the City of Milwaukee.
Essential Functions
Traffic Sign Installation
- Install, maintain, and repair all traffic control signs within a given district; determine proper location and message on missing or replaced signs.
- Initiate and implement the annual sign replacement program within an assigned district.
- Inspect and replace signs.
- Initiate record changes and ensure the accuracy of computerized sign records.
Equipment Maintenance and Safety
- Ensure the care and operation of related mechanical and vehicle equipment.
- Perform all work in a safe manner in accordance with departmental policies, laws, and Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.

Conditions of Employment
The Traffic Sign Worker must be willing and able to do thefollowing :
- Work outdoors in variable and extreme weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, and snow).
- Have manual dexterity and strength to use various hand tools and power tools properly and safely.
- Perform physical activities in work environments that require walking and standing, climbing stairs, ladders and scaffolding, crawling, crouching, stooping, kneeling, reaching, balancing, pushing, and pulling.
- Properly lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs. alone or up to 100 lbs. with assistance.
- Work in a noisy, distracting environment.
- Work in all City of Milwaukee neighborhoods within city limits.
The pre-employment medical requirements for this positioninclude the following :
- Physical Exam with lift test
- Vision Exam
- Audio-Gram
- Drug Screen
Minimum Requirements
- Six months of full-time experience working in maintenance, performing mechanical repairs, or working as a construction laborer.
- Valid driver’s license at time of application and throughout the selection process. NOTE : Valid Wisconsin driver license required at the time of appointment and throughout employment.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may beconsidered.

Technical
- Ability to read and understand documents, such as work rules, policies, operating manuals, and signs.
- Ability to organize and complete work assignments while adhering to deadlines.
- Ability to read and interpret street maps and navigate throughout the City of Milwaukee.
- Ability to use hand tools and light power tools properly and safely.
- Ability to always exercise care and good judgment regarding safety, abiding by safety-related policies, laws, and OSHA regulations.
- Situational awareness.
Interpersonal and Judgment
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Written communication skills to summarize data and prepare reports.
- Verbal communication skills to effectively convey information to other staff and managers.
- Customer service skills and ability to interact with the public in a polite, calm manner.
- Ability to work cooperatively, effectively, and fairly with coworkers and residents whose backgrounds may differ from one’s own.
Current Salary
The current salary range (Pay Range 8DN) is $51,816 annually,and the current resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residentsis $53,370.
