The lead physician assistant (PA) in emergency medicine (EM) plays a pivotal leadership role in the clinical operations of the emergency department (ED). This position combines direct patient care with administrative and supervisory responsibilities, ensuring high-quality, efficient, and evidence-based emergency care delivery. The lead PA serves as a liaison between the APC team and ED leadership, providing mentorship, coordinating scheduling, supporting onboarding / training, and fostering professional development within the team.
Clinical Duties
- Provide high-quality medical care to patients presenting with acute illnesses and injuries in the ED under the supervision of an emergency physician
- Perform comprehensive history and physical exams, order and interpret diagnostic tests, perform procedures, and formulate treatment and disposition plans
- Document patient encounters accurately and timely in the electronic health record (EHR)
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including physicians, nurses, consultants, and ancillary staff to ensure optimal patient outcomes
- Participate in trauma resuscitations, medical codes, and rapid response calls as needed
Leadership and Administrative Duties
Serve as the primary point of contact for the advanced practice provider (APP) team in the EDOversee scheduling, shift assignments, and PTO coordination for APCs to ensure 24 / 7 coverage and operational efficiencyParticipate in the recruitment, onboarding, orientation, and evaluation of new APCsDevelop and implement protocols, clinical guidelines, and performance improvement initiatives in collaboration with ED leadershipConduct regular meetings with the APC team to provide updates, gather feedback, and address concernsFoster continuing education, CME activities, and skill development among APCsServe as liaison between APCs and hospital administration, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and compliance with policiesMonitor and report key performance indicators (e.g., productivity, patient satisfaction, charting compliance) for the APC teamActively participate in departmental meetings, quality improvement projects, and strategic planningWant to learn more?
