Job Description

The Chief, Primary Care is responsible for the overall strategic and administrative leadership and operational execution of the broad Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Primary Care Affiliation Model, which includes Children's primary care physicians, as well as a variety of Children's affiliation models, including partnerships with Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). This leader will also build strong relationships with independent primary care groups in Atlanta and throughout Georgia. Responsibilities include appropriate coordination and collaboration with The Children's Care Network (TCCN), a clinically integrated network that encompasses the associated pediatric primary care network.

The Chief will develop a market-leading primary care enterprise that supports and enables pediatricians to thrive, consistently achieves operational excellence, meets the evolving needs of Atlanta's children and families, trains future generations of pediatricians, and aligns with independent pediatricians.

The Chief will work with the Chief of Academic Primary Care and Chief Teaching Officer to ensure the availability of teaching sites that meet or exceed LCME / ACGME requirements for pediatric experiences and support the development of a sustainable pediatric workforce. The Chief will be responsible for leading and ensuring the delivery of exceptional clinical care through efficient and effective operations and sustainable financial models.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop a strategy for Children's primary care that builds a network of pediatricians and clinicians and allows for multiple models of affiliation with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, leveraging our work with our community integrated network (TCCN).
  • Build a best practice and replicable and scalable practice management system, inclusive of tools that can be utilized for Children's practices and offered to physicians to enhance the practice of pediatrics and importantly be responsive to patient and family needs. This system should be transportable and available to the Mercer scholars to support their ability to stand up and run practices in rural Georgia.
  • Build and identify practices that will serve as training sites for pediatric residents to provide an optimal training experience and to encourage pediatricians to stay in Georgia to practice. The leader will work with our academic partners to include developing curriculum for pediatric residents on how to effectively run a practice that will prepare them for being successful and providing sustainable primary care in Georgia. Partners with the Chief Teaching Officer to incorporate training program needs at Emory, Morehouse, Mercer, UGA, and others to develop workforce plans to meet the needs of Atlanta and Georgia's pediatric population.
  • Lead conversations with physicians interested in transitioning their practices either through sale or employment. Lead the due diligence and comprehensive assessment of each practice, recommend plan for each and if determined to become part of the Children's system, lead transaction and transition.
  • Identify and build key relationships.

Partner with TCCN leadership to meet with Atlanta-based pediatricians to understand and anticipate their needs, working to ensure Children's offerings meet those needs.

  • Partner with Atlanta-based Federally Qualified Health Centers to deliver quality pediatric care through partnerships.
  • Maintain relationships and build trust with pediatricians across the greater Atlanta area and the broader network of pediatric providers. Chairs the Primary Care Leadership Council.
  • Responsible for operational oversight of practices and clinics within Children's Primary Care.
