Overview

Rate of Pay : $22-23 hr DOE

Shifts : 8 : 00 AM to 5 : 00 PM; Night shifts 4 : 00 PM to 10 : 00 PM, varies according to weather. Must be available early mornings for control work as needed.

Seasonal, Full-Time available

Must be available holidays & weekends

FLSA Status : Non-Exempt / Hourly

Summary : Promote general mountain safety by marking boundaries and hazards, participating in avalanche mitigation work, responding to emergencies (medical, search & rescue, weather, etc.), and engaging guests in an informative and pleasant manner. Perform a majority of duties on skis.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • First Aid : Administer first aid and transport injured skiers or visitors / working personnel. Communicate via 2-way radio regarding accidents and status of first aid.
  • Transport / Evacuation : Properly package patients and transport with the toboggan.
  • Knowledge of helicopter protocols and location of landing zones.
  • Avalanche reduction work : Mitigate avalanche-prone areas throughout the day during hazardous periods.
  • Proficient as 2nd or 3rd on 1 or more control routes.
  • Explosives work : Exhibits working knowledge and training of explosives in avalanche reduction programs (supervised).
  • Avalanche rescue work : Familiar with avalanche rescue procedures and available rescue equipment.
  • Search and Rescue : Carry out search and rescue for persons within and out of bounds.
  • Sweep operations : End of day and morning sweep operations.
  • Lift evacuation : Follow lift evacuation procedures and know location and use of lift evacuation equipment.
  • Hill safety : Place and maintain signs, bamboo, ropes, fences, etc., per area plan.
  • Regular sweeps of runs to identify and remove problem areas.
  • Accident reporting and investigation : Complete accident reports accurately and legibly; gather information for investigations.
  • Public relations : Be helpful and courteous to staff and the skiing public; provide friendly assistance and advice to skiers.
  • Remain calm and tactful in emergencies, violations, and unusual circumstances.
  • Training : Upgrade and refresh skills yearly; pursue additional personal training (avalanche, medical, SAR, AI, NSP Instructor, etc.).
  • Assist with training of Ski Patrol; enforce ski area policies and update knowledge annually.
  • Skier safety : Know and communicate the skier responsibility code; emphasize skier safety; warn or remove skiers whose conduct is reckless or dangerous.
  • Equipment and facility maintenance : Inspect patrol equipment and keep facilities clean and in good repair; ensure terrain park aesthetic and safety.
  • Be an example of safe recreation and skiing practices at all times.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; or 1-3 months related experience and / or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Candidate for no less than 1 full season or equivalent ski patrol experience.
  • Knowledge of rope systems, anchoring / belay is helpful; avalanche awareness classes or backcountry experience preferred.
  • Advanced to expert skier capable of performing duties on all terrain levels; proficient with day-to-day ski patrol operations.
  • Proficient with emergency procedures and plans (Avalanche Rescue Plan, Missing Persons, Lift Evacuations, Sundance Emergency Response Plan).
  • Familiar with avalanche control procedures; use of 2-way radio.
  • Utah State EMTB or higher medical certification; current CPR card.
  • Physical ability to ski, communicate, and perform duties; capable of lifting up to 100 pounds; vision and hearing requirements described.
  • Must be 21 years old per OSHA for explosives work; must be an advanced to expert alpine skier with a flexible schedule.
