Title : Sr. Mechanical Engineer

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will participate in the development of hardware components for ground and flight hardware systems that support NASA missions. This hardware is used to maintain the health and well-being of astronauts or to conduct experiments on the International Space Station and exploration programs. The Senior Mechanical Engineer is expected to have a high aptitude in mechanical design, a focus on delivering high-quality hardware, and the ability to understand and apply core mechanical engineering concepts and the integration of mechanical engineering principles for successful collaboration with engineers in related disciplines.
Responsibilities
- Have extensive knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and practices and apply that knowledge to make independent decisions on a broad range of space-related engineering problems.
- Independently evaluate, select, and apply standard and advanced engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria; use judgment to provide engineering solutions. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will receive technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed project plans.
- Serve in technical leadership roles.
- Have work reviewed to ensure sound professional judgment and participate in reviewing others\' work to ensure quality.
- Perform mechanical engineering work including requirements and definition, hardware conceptual design and test, hardware design and test, hardware detailed design and test, hardware assembly / fabrication, hardware acceptance and qualification test support, and hardware operations support for assigned projects.
- Receive instructions on assignment objectives and complex features, and work with limited to minimal supervision.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Compliance with Safety, Health, and Environmental plans and safety policies; report safety violations to supervisory or management personnel.Compliance with the Quality Assurance plan, policies, and procedures.Maintain regular and acceptable attendance as determined by the Company.Complete all assigned training and adhere to company policies, procedures, and work rules; contribute to continuous improvement.Follow established procedures and generate finished work products under time and budget constraints to meet quality targets.Ability to work within a team environment and understand and execute processes and procedures.Strong written and verbal communication skills; mentoring of younger design engineers; provide design review oversight and guidance to engineers on projects.Plan, schedule, conduct, or coordinate detailed phases of engineering work on major projects or medium-sized projects.Work with conventional engineering practices, including complex features and coordination requirements; apply engineering principles to related specialties.Communicate with contract management, peers, and customers; support ISO / AS9100 / CMMI activities and audits.Determine, track, and report project tasking and status regarding technical progress, budget, schedule, and risks.Other duties as assigned.Education / Experience
Required : A BS degree in Mechanical Engineering and a minimum of 10 years related experience (average 15+ years; at least 12 years in flight hardware development). Prior experience with NASA, NASA contractors, or DoD; demonstrated success in complex projects in dynamic environments; experience in developing hardware / products for highly integrated projects; mentoring younger engineers; troubleshooting hardware issues; risk identification and mitigation; comprehensive knowledge of engineering disciplines in human spaceflight programs; experience with NASA systems; excellent written and verbal communication skills; leadership experience of technical personnel.
Desirable : Experience in troubleshooting mechanical issues; working knowledge of electrical systems; experience in machine shop estimation and production planning.
Skills / Training
Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing (MS Office).Able to work in a team environment; clearly communicate information to technical forums.Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills; ability to lead and motivate personnel to high performance and efficiency.Excellent oral and written communication; ability to communicate with project managers, leads, peers, customers, and contract colleagues.Mature, professional judgment in establishing design artifacts, objectives, milestones, and priorities.Experience with configuration and data management processes.Reliable and dependable work habits and dedication to getting the job done.Desirable : Familiarity with NASA or DoD Work Instructions; experience with NASA systems.
