The Vice Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Affairs (VPDUA) is first and foremost a passionate champion of undergraduate education and student success.

The VPDUA is a key member of the Provost and Executive Vice Presidents leadership team, with the primary responsibilities of providing student centered, academic, strategic, and operational leadership for all initiatives supporting undergraduate education and campus-wide student success programs.

This individual leads the enhancement of academic programs including program review, assessment of student learning, advising initiatives, and development of new academic programs.

They provide support for campus leadership for reaccreditation. The VPDUA assists the Provost / EVP in building collaborative networks across the University to support undergraduate student success, degree completion, high-impact practices, and general education throughout the undergraduate experience, and helps maintain connectivity between the Provost / EVP and their many reporting units and individuals.

The VPDUA identifies and realizes strategic priorities for the Provost / EVP related to undergraduate education and student success and executes specific strategic and logistical projects that support those strategic priorities.

The VPDUA leads initiatives to promote equity of opportunity and diversity. They will work with academic units across all disciplines to advance student success and improve student retention and graduation rates.

This position involves significant independent decision-making and extensive partnering with units and individuals who report to or collaborate closely with the VPUDA and the Provost / EVPs Office, including the academic deans and vice presidents from across the university.

The Assistant Vice President for Student Success and the Executive Director of University Academic Advising and Outreach dual report to the VPDUA and to the Vice President for Student Affairs.

The Director of the University Honors Program, the Professor of Military Science (Army ROTC), the Professor of Aerospace Studies (Air Force ROTC), and the undergraduate student appeals officer also report to the VPDUA.

The VPDUA always represents the Office of the Provost in a professional and engaging manner.

The individual in this position will demonstrate significant administrative experience at a large, complex university. They will demonstrate a high level of personal leadership, initiative, and project management expertise to translate ideas and vision into action, making timely, informed decisions to support effective processes, and help the Provost / EVP achieve significant gains in productivity and impact.

The VPDUA partners with the Provost / EVP to lead the Provost / EVPs Office in achieving its strategic vision and goals relative to undergraduate education and student success, including developing and executing the logistical processes that will lead to the achievement of goals in consultation with the Provost / EVP but as the primary executor.

The VPDUA is a 12-month full-time position. The VPDUA is a member of the Provost and Executive Vice Presidents staff and the Presidents Executive Leadership Team.

Required Job Qualifications or relevant terminal academic degree from an accredited institution.

  • Rank of professor with tenure earned at an R1 university and eligible for tenure in an academic department at CSU. Advanced associate professors (5+ years at an R1) may be considered.
  • Seven or more years of academic, higher education leadership experience at an R1 university at the department, college, or university level.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Ten or more years of progressive experience in higher education.
  • Rank of full professor.

  • Experience related to programmatic budget oversight. Experience with strategic and intentional budget management, planning, forecasting, and allocations.

  • Engagement with and connection to national initiatives and trends related to undergraduate education, student success, high-impact practices, assessment of learning, and curriculum.
  • Familiarity with and commitment to the Land Grant Mission and its purpose.

Essential Duties Job Duty Category Executive Leadership and Management Duty / Responsibility

  • Provide comprehensive executive-level support of a substantial and confidential nature to the Provost / EVP, contributing expertise to making informed decisions in a timely manner.
  • Develop and assure compliance with policies relevant to undergraduate education. Policies include, but are not limited to, graduation requirements, student academic appeals, differential tuition, and special course fees.
  • Oversee the final review of undergraduate student academic appeals after they have been reviewed at the department and college levels.
  • Oversee the undergraduate curriculum including reviewing proposals for new degrees and programs of study assuring compliance with university strategic planning and CDHE guidelines.
  • Continuous improvement of guidelines and metrics for academic program reviews.
  • Work in strong collaboration with the Director of Assessment and the Vice Provost for Planning and Effectiveness to develop strategy for assessment of student learning, including university-level and program-level assessment.
  • Work in close partnership with the Vice Provost for Planning and Effectiveness to guide the campus reaccreditation process.
  • Provide visionary and creative leadership in the development, review, improvement, and prioritization of student success programs and monitor accountability for success.
  • Coordinate oversight for university advising strategy and initiatives.
  • Oversight of units and staff reporting to the VPDUA including Student Success, Academic Advising and Outreach, Honors, Army ROTC, and Air Force ROTC.

Percentage Of Time 75% Job Duty Category Liaison Roles and Committee Membership Duty / Responsibility

  • Member of the Provosts Leadership Council and the Presidents Executive Leadership Team.
  • Liaison with various entities within the Division of Student Affairs and The Institute for Learning and Teaching (TILT) to partner and communicate priorities and implementation of initiatives to enhance undergraduate student education.
  • Leadership of Student Success Initiatives (SSI) and membership on the Student Success Leadership Team.
  • Chair the Committee of Undergraduate Associate Deans.
  • Work with the Registrars Office to connect Registrar activities to Academic Affairs and serve as a resource.
  • Ex officio member of the University Curriculum Committee.
  • Attend the Colorado Commission for Higher Education General Education Council meetings and serve as a liaison on issues related to undergraduate programming and state-wide transfer issues.
  • Chair the Special Course Fee Committee, which leads decision-making and auditing efforts.
  • Chair the Course Capacity Committee and manage Course Capacity funds.
