Job Summary

Under general direction from the Head Coach, the Assistant Coach oversees specific aspects of the sports program and helps develop strategies for developing and maintaining the Men's Varsity Volleyball program. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, position-specific skill-work, planning and execution of practice and games, opponent scouting / film breakdown, on-campus and off-campus recruiting, in-season conditioning programs, fundraising events, and various administrative duties including team travel. Must be attentive to detail, keep accurate records, and work with a diverse constituency. Must foster an environment of NCAA compliance. The Assistant Coach reports to the Head Coach. Work schedule often includes evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Appointment Information

Budgeted Salary : By Agreement Range $35,000 - $37,500 annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience. California law requires posting a reasonable estimate of compensation. The salary shown is the budgeted amount and should not be exceeded.

    Job Duties

    75% - Coaching

  • Under guidance of the Head Coach, develops technical aspects of player coaching.
  • Analyzes performance and instructs participants in program strategies and techniques to prepare them for competition. Observes players while they perform to determine the need for individual or team improvement and participates in student athlete performance.
  • Ensures adherence to all governing rules, university, department, conference, NCAA policies and procedures and NCAA compliance. Represents and promotes professional conduct, university good will and high standards at all events and matches and may assist in coaching at competitive events.
  • Assists with and leads practice and conditioning sessions.
  • Travels to contests by driving University, rental and / or personal vehicle. This may include University vans or rental vans.
  • 15% - Recruitment

  • Assists in the recruitment of prospective athletes within the framework of the university, department, conference and current D3 bylaws and manual.
  • Participates in on and off campus recruiting and managing recruit documentation.
  • Travels for recruiting or conference attendance by driving rental and / or personal vehicle.
  • 10% - Fundraising

  • Participates in fundraising activities for the program and department including camps and clinics.
  • Attends department wide meetings, committees and events.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training with a college-level program.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with athletic participants, staff, and parents of student athletes.
  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making; be an effective problem solver.
  • Specialized knowledge of the team sport or activity, as well as basic technical expertise in coaching principles.
  • Current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the affiliated athletic conference, the NCAA or NAIA, as well as other associations and agencies to which the campus adheres, and at all times avoid violations of these rules and standards.
  • Leadership skills to mentor and develop student-athletes, assistant coaching or program instruction staff, and skills in effective assistant coaching.
  • Proven ability to teach specified sport to individuals and the team as a whole. Personal experience with specified sport.
  • Superior organizational skills to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; vital for dealing with players, staff, alumni, recruits and their families.
  • Strong social media and online communication skills to represent the University and athletics department programs.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Applied knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat and basic computer skills.
  • Working knowledge of Hudl and Front Rush.
  • Special Conditions of Employment

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Selected candidate must pass the employment misconduct disclosure process.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California and participate in the DMV pull notice program.
  • NCAA certified recruiter status or have the ability to obtain it within 60 calendar days of hire.
  • CPR / AED / First Aid certification or have the ability to obtain it within 60 calendar days of hire.
  • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to work long periods of time in wilderness conditions and to travel to remote areas.
  • Ability to work in conditions of variable temperature / weather with possible exposure to strong, unpleasant odors, high levels of noise and vibrations, and exposure to dust and allergens.
  • The selected candidate will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies after hours as necessary.
  • Clery Act : This position has been identified as a Campus Security Authority (CSA); required to report crimes, incidents, and disciplinary referral statistics as required by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.
  • Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus and within a defined regional or service area, nationally and internationally.
  • Maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
  • Complete training within established time frames including UC compliance training.
  • Vaccination policy compliance for all employees; applicable policies apply.
  • CANRA Mandated Reporter : required to report known or suspected child abuse or neglect and sign a statement acknowledging this requirement.
