Position Summary
The Medical Assistant / GI Scope Technician supports the clinical operations of an outpatient gastroenterology practice by performing both traditional medical assistant duties and specialized endoscopy reprocessing tasks. This role ensures safe, efficient patient care by assisting providers with procedures, preparing exam rooms, maintaining equipment, and performing high-level disinfection of GI scopes in accordance with regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Support
- Greet and prepare patients for GI visits and procedures, taking accurate vitals, histories, and medication lists.
- Assist providers during examinations, minor procedures, and diagnostic testing.
- Perform patient education on procedure preparation (e.g., colonoscopy prep), after-visit instructions, and follow-up care.
- Document patient encounters accurately in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Set up and restock exam rooms with required supplies and instruments.
GI Scope Technician Responsibilities
Perform high-level disinfection, cleaning, and reprocessing of endoscopes following manufacturer guidelines and industry standards (e.g., SGNA, AAMI, CDC).Conduct leak testing, visual inspection, proper storage, and handling of scopes.Maintain documentation related to reprocessing cycles, quality checks, and equipment tracking.Monitor the performance of automated endoscope reprocessors (AERs) and troubleshoot basic equipment issues.Ensure the endoscopy reprocessing area meets standards for cleanliness, workflow, and infection control.Operational & Administrative Duties
Manage patient flow to support efficient clinic operations.Schedule appointments, verify insurance, and assist with procedure authorizations if needed.Maintain inventory of supplies, including endoscopy-specific equipment and disinfectants.Follow all OSHA, HIPAA, and infection-control regulations and participate in ongoing compliance training.Support quality improvement initiatives and participate in staff meetings and training.Qualifications
Required
High school diploma or GED.Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or equivalent experience.Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.Ability to lift, move, or position patients or equipment as required.Preferred
Prior experience in GI / endoscopy or sterile processing.Certification or training in endoscope reprocessing (e.g., SGNA GI Technician training, CSPDT / CRCST).Experience with electronic health records (Epic, Cerner, etc.).Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Strong understanding of infection prevention and high-level disinfection protocols.Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced clinical environment.Excellent communication and patient-centered customer service skills.Attention to detail, especially regarding documentation and compliance.Ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, nurses, and support staff.Working Conditions
