Astrobotic Technology, Inc. is a space robotics company that seeks to make space accessible to the world. The companys suite of lunar landers delivers payloads to the Moon for companies, governments, universities, non-profits, and individuals.

The company is also developing advanced space robotics capabilities such as terrain relative navigation, mobile robotics for lunar surface operations, and reliable computing systems for mission-critical applications.

Originally spun out of Carnegie Mellon University in 2007, Astrobotic is pioneering affordable planetary access that promises to spark a new era of exploration, science, tourism, resource utilization, and mining.

Astrobotics headquarters is in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with a second location in Mojave, California.

Astrobotic wants you to join the Landers & Spacecraft (L&S) Advanced Development (AD) team which is responsible for leading efforts around research & development (R&D), and bid & proposals (B&P), and the chief engineers (CE) office.

The team will focal efforts to architect new landers and spacecraft. The team investigates increasing technology readiness levels (TRL) of components, sub-assemblies, and / or systems.

The team also acts as an independent reviewer for existing programs during milestone reviews, emergent issues, review boards, etc.

You will internally communicate with other AD team members, L&S sub-systems, and other Astrobotic departments. You will externally communicate with customers, partners, and suppliers.

Note : This position may be filled at multiple levels; I, II, Senior, Principal, etc. depending on the candidates experience.

Job Responsibilities :

  • Develop novel fluid systems and components for thermal control of new spacecraft
  • Perform first order, 1-D, FEA, and / or CFD analysis to predict system performance
  • Develop and review CAD files of thermal components and spacecraft layouts
  • Hands on fabrication, assembly, and testing of mockups and prototypes
  • Develop trade studies to support technical, business, and / or programmatic actions and decisions
  • Lead and / or contribute to programmatic topics such as schedules, resourcing, and budgets estimations
  • Support the development of technical proposals for R&D or mission opportunities
  • Communicate with multiple engineering disciplines, partners, customers, and vendors to resolve technical risks and challenges

Required Skills & Qualifications :

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or similar related discipline
  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas : thermal, propulsion, and / or integration & testing (I&T)
  • CAD and lifecycle management tools (SolidWorks, SpaceClaim, and Teamcenter preferred)
  • Familiarity with designing, analyzing, or testing thermal control systems (heaters, sensors, radiators, multi-layer insulation (MLI), coatings, active cooling systems, etc.)
  • Experience testing pressurized fluid and gas systems, including proof, burst, and performance characterization
  • Strong organizational, multi-tasking, and problem-solving skills and able to self-start with minimal guidance
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with changing needs and requirements

Desired Skills & Qualifications :

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or similar related fields
  • 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA, Thermal Desktop and ANSYS preferred)
  • Experience with Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD, ANSYS Fluent preferred)
  • Knowledgeable of range safety requirements and compliance
  • Experience working with external customers such as commercial companies and government agencies (NASA, AFRL, DARPA, etc.)
  • Eligibility to obtain and hold a U.S. security clearance
