Job description

Strategy Design - Health Literacy

A healthier future. It's what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love.

The Opportunity

The Strategy Design for Health Literacy plays a critical enterprise-building role in advancing Genentech's Population Health goals through clear, culturally grounded, and functionally accessible health communication. Operating within the Population Health Center of Excellence, this individual leads the design, piloting, and scaling of health literacy infrastructure - ensuring that both internal and external stakeholders have the tools, systems, and training needed to enable understanding and action across the healthcare continuum.

Reporting to the Strategy and Innovation Head, this role is responsible for shaping and embedding enterprise-wide capabilities that span the full spectrum of Genentech's communications, from patient-facing materials and clinical study content to internal employee training and operational standards. This leader is accountable for ensuring Genentech's health education efforts are accurate, understandable, and impactful, grounded in both regulatory standards (working closely with cross-functional Regulatory, Legal and Compliance partners) and real-world patient needs.

This role partners closely with Communications, Learning & Development, Population Science, CMG, gRED, PD, Pharma Technical, People and Culture, and Medical Affairs to drive adoption across Genentech's enterprise. With a dual focus on strategy and execution, the Strategy Design - Health Literacy will also advise leadership on how to measure impact and scale sustainably, ensuring that health literacy is not just a project - but a permanent practice embedded across business functions. As the capability matures, this leader will partner with enterprise functions to identify long-term ownership pathways and ensure the sustainability of health literacy efforts.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Roadmap

  • Define and deliver the enterprise strategic roadmap for health literacy in partnership with the Senior Director, Strategy and Innovation, including vision, adoption milestones, and embedding health literacy into business-as-usual operations.
  • Co-create, guide, advise, and implement an integrated health literacy strategy to deliver patient-facing information across print, digital, and telehealth.
  • Partner with multiple internal groups (Advocacy Relations, Customer Experience Suite, Access Solutions & Patient Services, CMG senior leaders, etc.) and global partners to embed principles of health literacy and align initiatives.
  • Build strong relationships with and partner with external public health literacy organizations to ensure collaboration, exposure to resources / regulations, and integrate work across population health strategic pillars for maximum impact.

Standards & Content Development

  • Develop and maintain enterprise-wide SOPs, communication standards, and culturally relevant content frameworks, staying current on regulatory guidelines, plain language, numeracy, consent communication, and healthcare communication trends, while collaborating with Data, Digital, and Analytics / Learning Technology teams for skills assessment and forecasting.
  • Piloting & Program Design

  • Drive the execution and refinement of enterprise learning strategies by leading prototyping, pilot programs, and acting as the primary lead for LSD initiatives, ensuring all training is developed and executed in collaboration with internal colleagues.
  • Foster alignment and adoption across the enterprise by partnering with Communications, Learning & Development, Squad, and Customer Engagement senior leaders to design and deliver comprehensive onboarding toolkits, training modules, and experiential learning content.
  • Measurement & Future Capability Building

  • Establish success metrics, identify new opportunities in health communication, and develop business cases to expand enterprise capabilities.
  • Refine strategy through data / feedback and serve as a key advisor to influence health communication design and policy standards across functions.
  • Coach and mentor direct reports, fostering an inclusive, high-performing culture with clear roles and priorities.
  • Who You Are

    Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • 8+ years of experience in health communication, health literacy, or patient education within biopharma, academic medicine, or healthcare systems.
  • Demonstrated success developing and embedding enterprise-level communication frameworks, training, and new capabilities.
  • Familiarity with health literacy principles, including plain language, numeracy, consent communication, and regulatory considerations.
  • Strong leadership, program management, and cross-functional influence skills, with proven ability to drive change management across multiple functions.
  • Deep understanding of the U.S. healthcare system and the patient / provider experience, linking local priorities to enterprise-wide strategies.
  • Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • Advanced degree in Public Health, Health Communication, Instructional Design, or a related field.
  • Experience developing patient-facing educational content and training materials in regulated environments.
  • Background in designing and evaluating health literacy interventions at scale.
