We are seeking a Senior Transportation Design Project Manager to lead infrastructure projects from planning through final design and delivery. This position offers the opportunity to manage complex roadway, highway, and transportation design projects for state and local agencies, including the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). The ideal candidate is an experienced professional with a strong technical foundation in roadway design, excellent leadership skills, and the ability to manage multidisciplinary teams and multiple priorities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage all phases of transportation design projects, including planning, preliminary and final design, permitting, and construction support.
- Serve as the primary client contact, maintaining strong relationships with NCDOT, municipalities, and other public and private clients.
- Prepare and review design plans, technical specifications, cost estimates, and project documentation to ensure quality, accuracy, and compliance with applicable standards.
- Oversee project budgets, schedules, and deliverables to meet performance and contractual expectations.
- Coordinate with departments to integrate design and field data effectively.
- Provide technical mentorship and guidance to design staff and junior engineers.
- Manage and organize multiple concurrent projects while ensuring alignment with firm standards and client objectives.
- Contribute to business development by identifying new opportunities and supporting proposal and pursuit efforts.
Skills and Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) or Civil Engineering Technology (BSCET) from an accredited institution.Professional Engineer (PE) license required.Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in transportation design, with demonstrated success in managing roadway and highway design projects.Strong understanding of transportation design standards, including AASHTO, MUTCD, and NCDOT guidelines.Proficient in MicroStation, Geopak, Corridor Modeling, and OpenRoads; familiarity with 3D modeling workflows preferred.Experience with NCDOT IPD / PD and other project delivery methods.NCDOT / DOT project experience preferred.Experience with survey coordination, data management, and integration of survey data into design models is beneficial.Proven engineering analysis and sound judgment in technical decision-making.Strong leadership, organization, and multitasking skills with a proactive and self-motivated approach.Excellent written and verbal communication skills for client interaction, reporting, and team collaboration.Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including MS Project for scheduling and project tracking.Summit Design and Engineering is an Equal Opportunity Employer / Affirmative Action.
