Tax Manager

Come join us! This position is located in Downtown, Honolulu. We support a hybrid working environment in which in-office work is generally required three to four days out of the work week. Normal business hours are 8 : 00AM 5 : 00PM. Remote work is not available. The salary range for this position is $140K - $190K depending on experience, skill set, certifications, licenses, education, etc.

Job Overview

As a Tax Manager, you will serve as a liaison between the partner / principal, the client, and the professional staff. Managers play a key role in risk mitigation for the Firm, as well as in staff development and retention. The position requires strong technical, client service, professionalism, marketing, administration skills, entrepreneurial spirit, and ability to develop, train and support junior staff. Managers must demonstrate substantial expertise in accounting and tax technical areas, and general economic trends affecting the business climate. You will also be expected to work outside of normal business hours if needed to complete client projects. Travel may be required in connection with professional development activities or client assignments.

Specific Responsibilities

Client Engagements

  • Manage a diverse and complex portfolio of clients, including corporate, partnership, Not-for-Profit, and other returns.
  • Ensure client engagements are handled efficiently and effectively, meeting all deadlines and quality standards.

Client Contact and Relationship Building

  • Serve as the primary contact for clients, maintaining regular communication throughout the year.
  • Develop and nurture strong working relationships with client personnel, understanding their business and industry, and the impact of current market conditions on their tax situation.
  • Keep clients informed of ever-changing tax laws and regulations that may affect their business or organization.
  • Issue Resolution

  • Identify and resolve issues that arise during tax return preparation and tax planning.
  • Represent clients in interactions with the IRS, including analyzing IRS notices and drafting responses.
  • Technical Research and Tax Planning

  • Perform technical research in complex situations requiring judgment and formulation of alternative courses of action.
  • Review research projects prepared by staff or managers.
  • Demonstrate expertise in tax planning for clients, developing tax planning suggestions to benefit clients.
  • Client Communication

  • Communicate effectively with clients to obtain necessary information with minimal disruption.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Firm services to offer appropriate services to clients.
  • Develop an entrepreneurial approach to client service and cultivate referrals.
  • Administrative and Technical

  • Responsible for client billing and collection activities, including fee discussions and monitoring staff time.
  • Ensure all work is performed and documented in accordance with industry and office standards, and in accordance with engagement letters and / or contracts arranged with clients.
  • Actively participate in tax department administrative projects and initiatives, taking the lead on select projects.
  • Work with partners and principals to establish standards for the tax staff.
  • Manage tax projects, including the preparation of client deliverables, to meet agreed-upon deadlines.
  • Anticipate delays or problems and make appropriate adjustments to ensure that client commitments are met.
  • Maintain constant communication with the engagement leader, keeping them well informed of engagement status and issues.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work seamlessly across lines of services with the Audit and Consulting practices.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in all tax software programs and serve as a resource for tax questions and issues from both tax and audit staff.
  • Develop a broad general knowledge of economic, political, and business conditions.
  • Cultivate several areas of deep technical expertise, such as federal, state, and local tax, or specific industry-related tax issues, to provide specialized knowledge and solutions to clients.
  • Liaise with subject matter experts as appropriate, collaborating with tax specialists to ensure comprehensive and accurate client service.
  • Staff Supervision and Self Development

  • Delegate work and supervise tax staff, ensuring the most efficient and effective use of staff time.
  • Promptly review staff's workpapers to maintain high standards of quality and accuracy.
  • Manage associates during engagements to enhance their learning and development.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback, on-the-job training, and act as an instructor for formal training programs.
  • Meet with each supervised staff member to provide summary feedback and discuss assignments.
  • Assist with recruiting activities and develop a network of peer and business contacts.
  • Act as an instructor for formal training programs, including the preparation of training materials.
  • Seek out and complete career development programs designed to enhance management, communication, and personal skills.
  • Establish good working relationships with all managers and staff, including inter-departmental relationships.
  • Business Development

  • Develop an understanding of Firm services to offer appropriate services to clients.
  • Demonstrate initiative, creativity, and imagination in approach to client service.
  • Develop and nurture strong working relationships with client personnel.
  • Cultivate referrals and meet with prospective clients.
  • Participate in proposal efforts and public speaking engagements, such as tax presentations to professional groups.
  • Qualifications and Attributes

  • Industry Experience : At least 7 years of progressive tax experience in a public accounting environment; or 2 years of experience as a tax manager.
  • Technical Expertise : Strong accounting, tax, leadership, supervisory and coaching skills.
  • Time Management : Excellent administration and time management skills to oversee concurrent responsibilities and meet deadlines.
  • Effective Communication Skills : Communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, to convey complex information professionally and concisely to clients and team members.
  • Client Relationship Management : Initiative, creativity, and imagination in approach to client service.
  • Continuous Learning Mentality : Stay updated on industry trends, new regulations, and best practices in order to educate self and others.
  • Ethical and Professional : Maintain high standards of integrity and confidentiality. Adhere to industry regulations and firm policies, setting a positive example for the team and earning client trust.
  • Business Acumen : Understand business operations and financial processes, enabling strategic decision-making and effective tax strategies tailored to each client's industry.

  • Flexibility : Demonstrate an ability to adapt quickly and appropriately to rapidly changing circumstances or varying management styles.
  • Education Requirements

  • Degree : Bachelor's or Master's Degree in accounting or a related program with strong accounting concentration. An advanced degree (generally a MAcc, Master of Taxation, or Law) is strongly preferred.
  • Required Licenses and Certificates

  • CPA License : Hold a current and valid certified public accountant's license. CPA licensure in the State of Hawaii is highly preferred.
  • AICPA Membership : Be a member in good standing with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).
  • Compensation

  • $140,000 to $190,000
  • The final salary offer is contingent upon the candidate's experience, qualifications, and market and business conditions.
