The Department of Ancient Mediterranean Studies & Archaeology provides a student-centered, inclusive, and supportive community for students with wide-ranging interests in the ancient Mediterranean world. Our students work closely with their professors both inside and outside the classroom, and often identify the individualized attention they receive as a unique benefit to the major. Our graduates enter the workforce as problem-solvers, dynamic thinkers, and global citizens with a unique perspective that bridges the past and present. Ancient Mediterranean Studies & Archaeology (previously known as Classical Studies) at UNC Greensboro offers a complete array of undergraduate courses in Greek, Latin, classical civilization, and archaeology. Students can concentrate in any of these areas to earn a degree. We also offer study abroad opportunities through our UNCG in Rome program and an archaeological field school in Greece.
Position Summary :
The Department of Ancient Mediterranean Studies & Archaeology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position to begin in August 2026. We seek a scholar whose research focuses on the history of the Roman world during the Republic and / or the Early Empire.
Candidates should be prepared to teach classes in their area of specialization, Latin at all levels, and courses on the histories and cultures of the Ancient Mediterranean. In addition to an active research program, applicants should have a strong record of teaching at the undergraduate level (including Latin) and an interest in mentoring students from a variety of backgrounds. Experience in online teaching is desirable. Applicants must hold or anticipate a Ph.D. in Classical Studies or related field by August 1st, 2026. We especially encourage applicants with cross-disciplinary interests and innovative approaches to the ancient world that will expand upon the current research and teaching interests in the department.
