Description

Postdoctoral Associate will carry out advanced independent and / or directed research to achieve the objectives of Dr. Cox's awarded grants.

The primary purpose of postdoctoral training is to develop new or advanced research skills, increase publication record, gain experience in scientific writing, grant writing, presentation skills, and mentoring of graduate students.

Dr. Cox studies hearing loss, balance (vestibular) dysfunction, and regeneration of sensory cells (called hair cells) in the inner ear.

This position will primarily support a DOD-funded grant focused on drug screening to identify compounds that induce hair cell regeneration.

Cochlear explants and fate-mapping are used to screen compounds, followed by translation to an in vivo model of noise-induced hearing loss.

Postdoctoral Associate will conduct specific research project(s) under the supervision of Dr. Cox. He or she is expected to think independently in the design and development of the project(s), as well as contribute to the design and development of other ongoing projects in the lab.

Postdoctoral Associate will mentor students and assist other members of the Cox lab with mouse colony maintenance and other experiments as needed.

He or she will perform a variety of experimental techniques that are routine in the Cox lab, as well as perform data analysis and write manuscripts for publication or for grant-related progress reports.

Presentation of data at lab meetings and national or international scientific meetings is also expected.

5% Teaching

1. Supervise and help train undergraduate, graduate and / or medical students.

95% Research

1. Work independently to design & develop project(s)

2. Perform technical experiments such as cochlear dissection, cochlear explant cultures, immunostaining, confocal microscopy, auditory brainstem response, and noise exposure.

3. Perform data analysis and statistical testing

4. Write manuscripts and assist with grant related progress reports

5. Present data at lab meetings and national or international scientific meetings

6. Assist with maintaining mouse colonies for breeding, weaning, genotyping, injections, and sample collection

7. Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of experiments and results.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants should have completed a in neuroscience, pharmacology or a related research field.

Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations

Desirable Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants with experience in auditory neuroscience, molecular biology, or research related to stem cells or regeneration in other organs systems.
