Position Overview
The Senior Database Administrator (DBA) provides enterprise-level database management, maintenance, and support for DOI's Human Resources Directorate (HRD) applications - including FPPS, NextFPPS, Quicktime, and WebTA .
This position is responsible for ensuring optimal performance, security, and recoverability of complex production, test, and development databases hosted on IBM Mainframe z / OS and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) environments. The DBA applies deep expertise in Software AG ADABAS , Predict , and SQL-based systems , supporting mission-critical HR and payroll systems serving thousands of federal users.
Key Responsibilities
Database Administration and Operations
- Administer, maintain, and optimize ADABAS databases (v8.6.1) running on IBM z / OS 2.5 for production, test, and development environments.
- Configure and manage Predict v8.5 data dictionary to ensure data consistency, structure integrity, and referential accuracy.
- Perform daily database monitoring , ensuring system availability, stability, and compliance with performance SLAs.
- Execute database backups, restores, and recovery operations to maintain resilience and meet RTO / RPO objectives.
- Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance , including space allocation management and file reorganization.
- Implement and manage database utilities, upgrades, and backouts using package management tools (e.g., yum , rpm ).
- Provide production support under a DBA on-call rotation to troubleshoot real-time issues and perform root cause analysis (RCA).
Performance Optimization and System Integration
Monitor performance metrics, analyze query and I / O efficiency, and tune ADABAS, SQL, and PostgreSQL queries for optimal throughput.Collaborate with application developers and architects to ensure database design aligns with system architecture and performance goals .Integrate new systems and modules into existing HRD data structures, ensuring backward compatibility and data integrity.Participate in database capacity planning and scalability analysis to support ongoing modernization and data growth.Develop, test, and optimize automation scripts using Bash / Korn / Bourne shell and UNIX utilities (e.g., grep , awk , sed , tr ) for database maintenance and monitoring tasks.
