Position Summary

The Basic & Transitional Studies Department is seeking qualified candidates to fill temporary Adult Basic Education and I-BEST instructor positions.

The instructors will perform duties and functions under the general direction of the Associate Dean of Basic & Transitional Studies and the English Language Institute.

The instructors will provide instruction, develop curriculum, and advise students primarily in courses in Adult Basic Education (ABE) and Integrated Basic Education Skills Training (I-BEST).

The Basic & Transitional Studies Department at Bellevue College is comprised of three programs : English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (ABE), and Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST).

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule

Adjunct Professor is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment.

Quarterly remuneration for 5-credit lecture class is $5,716.52 - $6,968.62 . Compensation is prorated based on type and duration of assignments.

Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement.

Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment / project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment.

All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.

Eligible employees are faculty who work a combined load of at least 50% at Bellevue College and other Washington State public institutions of higher education for two consecutive quarters are eligible for health and dental insurance at the start of the second consecutive quarter.

In addition to teaching, faculty maintains office hours and may participate in department and college activities. This position is represented by the Bellevue College Association of Higher Education (BCAHE) union.

About the Department

Adult Basic Education (ABE) is one of three programs in the Basic and Transitionsl Studies Program. BaTS programs support precollege students who are immigrants, refugees, U.

S. citizens, and non-native English learners to develop foundational skills in English, Math, Social Studies, Science, and academic skills to support their success in reaching college and career goals.

ABE instructors teach a variety of courses to support all the pathways.

Essential Functions

  • Perform student-centered teaching in English, Math, I-BEST certificate programs and / or High School + Content area courses : Social Studies, Science, Occupational Education.
  • Available to teach on campus and / or hybrid : online and in person. Most classes meet two to three times per week.
  • Foster a positive, caring, equitable learning environment where differences and pluralism are valued, and all students have opportunities to be successful learners.
  • Provide culturally responsible advising, such as navigating obstacles that underrepresented and historically marginalized student populations may experience in college (e.

g. students with disabilities, students of color, first generation college students, LBGTQ students, Veterans, English language learners, etc.).

  • Maintain excellence, current knowledge, and skills in teaching, in the ABE / I-BEST discipline.
  • Co-teach in college content courses at 50% overlap in I-BEST programs, and solo teach I-BEST support courses at 100%.
  • Participate in state and federally mandated assessments : CASAS.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Adult Education and Training (AEDT), Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) or related field.
  • Documented successful teaching experience in ABE, ESL / ELL, and / or I-BEST.
  • Ability to collaborate with and relate to students, faculty, and staff of varied ethnicity, ages, backgrounds, and abilities, and a commitment to a culturally diverse environment.
  • Background that shows willingness to engage in professional development activities.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with students and colleagues.
