Position Description

The University of Washington’s Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Division of Prosthetics & Orthotics (P&O), is offering an outstanding opportunity for an academic appointment as Assistant Professor (without tenure due to source of funding, which is typical of ranked faculty appointments within the department).

This position will be a split with the VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS). The appointment may be 87.5% FTE (62.

5% FTE at VAPSHCS CLiMB and 25% FTE within UW P&O) to 100% FTE (62.5% FTE at VAPSHCS CLiMB and 37.5% FTE within UW P&O). Anticipated start date is August 2024, but other dates may be considered.

Assistant Professors are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30).

Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.

As a member of the Division of Prosthetics & Orthotics, the successful candidate will participate in the research, scholarship, and teaching activities of the division and will be expected to fulfill requirements for advancement along the Clinician-Scientist pathway of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Washington School of Medicine.

The successful applicant will collaborate with research faculty at the University of Washington Center on Outcomes Research in Rehabilitation (uwcorr.

washington.edu), a Department research center focused on improving measurement of health outcomes through the development, testing, and application of novel performance-based and self-report instruments.

The individual hired will be responsible for contributing to federally-funded instrument development projects focused on improving measurement of health outcomes in people who use lower and upper limb prostheses (artificial limbs).

Responsibilities will include developing grant applications, developing research protocols, guiding research staff and assisting in the collection of data from human subjects, analyzing data, authoring or co-authoring manuscripts, and presenting at scientific conferences.

Productive scholarship including a history of extramural grant-funding and peer-reviewed publications is expected.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop an externally funded research program and become a successful independent investigator.

Additional responsibilities may include developing, teaching, and / or contributing to courses for Master of Prosthetics & Orthotics (MPO) students with diverse experiences and perspectives, collaborating with other Division faculty members to develop and grow our established MPO curriculum, and engaging in service to the University of Washington and the P&O profession at large.

Opportunities also may be available to mentor graduate students and / or teach in our PhD Program in Rehabilitation Science.

All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

COMPENSATION

This is a split position compensated separately by the VAPSHCS and UW according to FTE split. For the VAPSHCS FTE percentage, which is paid directly by VAPSHCS at a rate set by that organization, the base salary is $131,234 annually.

For the UW’s FTE percentage, which will be paid by UW, there is a base salary range for this position of $8,694 - $10,228 per month ($104,328 - $122,736 annually), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.

S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

Other compensation associated with this position may include a moving allowance or relocation incentive, if applicable.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The UW Department of Rehabilitation Medicine is nationally recognized for outstanding research, clinical care and education and has a long history as a regional center.

Ranked in the top 10 by US News & World Report, the Department has an exceptional record of successful extramural research funding and interprofessional collaboration and offers rich opportunities for interdisciplinary research, teaching, and learning.

As one of the largest recipients of rehabilitation research funding in the country, research is a key focus of our department.

Key research focus areas include limb loss, pain, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, brain injury, and disability. Our faculty collaborate extensively with other departments within the School of Medicine, as well as with outside institutions.

In fiscal year 2021, our department received more than $11 million in awards from government and private sources. The federal government is our largest sponsor at $6.

2 million, and our department is among the top recipients or funds from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for rehabilitation research.

The department has four clinical divisions : General Physiatry, Sports and Spine Physiatry, Pediatric Rehabilitation, and Rehabilitation Psychology & Neuropsychology.

Faculty provide clinical services across four UW Medicine campuses : Harborview Medical Center, University of Washington Medical Center-Montlake, University of Washington Medical Center-Northwest, and UW Eastside Specialty Center.

More than 25 of our faculty are based at Seattle Children’s Hospital and the Veteran’s Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System, which are UW Medicine-affiliated organizations.

The Sports and Spine division provides care at seven clinics throughout the UW Medicine system.

We offer nationally recognized training in rehabilitation therapies and rehabilitation research through four degree programs : PhD in Rehabilitation Science, Master in Occupational Therapy, Master in Prosthetics and Orthotics, and Doctor of Physical Therapy.

Qualifications

At the time of application, the applicant must :

  • hold a PhD (or foreign equivalent degree) in Prosthetics & Orthotics, Rehabilitation Science, or a related field.
  • hold an M.S. (or foreign equivalent degree) in Mechanical Engineering.
  • be certified to practice Prosthetics & Orthotics through the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics, and Pedorthics.
  • hold or be eligible for a professional Prosthetist and Orthotist license in the state of Washington.
  • have a minimum of three years of relevant research experience (e.g., developing outcome measures for prosthesis users, conducting comparative effectiveness studies or clinical trials of prosthetic interventions).
