At Houston Methodist the Student RespiratoryServices position is responsible for providing students withopportunities to follow a respiratory preceptor in a professionalsetting to receive feedback from practicing Professionals andsupport building clinical competency and confidence in transitionfrom student role to new graduate respiratory therapist.

Thisposition is accountable and responsible for respiratory careadministered under the direction of a Licensed RespiratoryTherapist and in accordance with therapy guidelines applicableregulations and departmental policy procedures and practicesensuring the departments patient visitor and customer interactionsare aligned with Houston Methodists ICARE values.

The StudentRespiratory Services position demonstrates competence to adapt towork and customer service to accommodate the unique physicalpsychosocial cultural safety and other developmental needs ofpatients served by the department.

This position demonstratesappropriate communication skills and interpersonalrelationships.

SERVICEESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

Participates inrespiratory care services and care delivered to patients. Performsdirect patient care treatments and procedures in accordance withestablished policies and standards of the hospital as outlined inthe plan of care.

Acts as patient advocate by preserving theprivacy of patients and families keeping the safety of the patientin mind.

Identifies andcommunicates patient problems / needs and respiratory interventionsperformed to the Respiratory Therapist assigned.

Under supervisionprovides education to patients patients family members and / orcaregivers and reinforces health care information / teaching providedby the RespiratoryTherapist.

Proactivelyseeks out assignments and learning opportunities within assigneddepartment or on teams that cross departments.

Follows up on actionitems to ensure completion ofassignments.

Conductspatient and familycentered care standards and provides directpatient care under the direction of a respiratory therapist.

Responds to therapy calls contacting nursing personnel asappropriate and follows through with meeting patient needs. Usespeertopeer accountability towards improving department metrics forpatient satisfaction andcare

Organizes the workflow problemsolves basic and routine matters seeking guidance andassistance from preceptor by utilizing resource persons i.

e.licensed respiratory therapist or management policy and proceduremanuals or other references on standards ofcare.

Legally documentswhere applicable delegated observations and interventions careadministered in accordance with established policies andprocedures.

Accurately reports observations conditions and problemsof patients to licensed personnel to achieve desired patientoutcomes.

Rounds to ensurepatient needs are met (four Ps). Supports initiatives to preventconditions such as pressure ulcers patient falls andhospitalacquired infections.

Reports near misses and collaborateswith the interprofessional health care team to improve patientsafety.

Contributes toidentification of corrective action and improvement activitiesimpacting quality and safety targets on the unitbased scorecardthrough peertopeer accountability reporting near misses andcollaborating with the interprofessionalteam.

FINANCE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

  • Assists withpatient and staffing needs (floats) across the service line orhospital within the scope of their role or validatedcompetencies.
  • Selfmotivatedto independently manage time effectively prioritize daily tasks tomeet established and committed deadlines minimizing incidentalovertime.

EDUCATION

  • HighSchool diploma or equivalent education (examples include : GEDverification of homeschool equivalency partial or full completionof postsecondary educationetc.)
  • Actively enrolled ina school of respiratoryprogram

WORKEXPERIENCE

Successfullycompleted one clinicalrotation

LICENSES ANDCERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • BLSBasic Life Support (AHA) AND
  • RCP Licensed RespiratoryCare Practitioner State Licensure by the Texas Medical Board (ofgraduation) within 6 months
