Certification or registration as a Medical Assistant or completion of a recognized one year Medical Assistant Program, or completion of a health care profession program with a curriculum incorporating elements of a Medical Assistant program including but not limited to : pathophysiology, medical terminology, basic pharmacology and medication administration including dose calculation and psychology. BLS certification. Experience in a clinical setting, particularly in managing patient records and supporting providers.

As a Medical Assistant II at the Thielen Student Health Center, you'll play a vital role in supporting the health and wellbeing of the Iowa State student community. You'll assist in both clinical and clerical duties to help create a seamless, welcoming experience for patients and contribute to a holistic approach to student health. Under direct supervision of a physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner or registered nurse, perform technical, patient care, and related clerical functions in an ambulatory setting by coordinating patient intake and clinic flow.

Characteristic duties and responsibilities include :

• Responsible for facilitating the smooth flow of patients through the clinic through interaction with patients and staff.
• Assisting in clinic with physical examination of patients and related treatments, including but not limited to : patient history, medication records, allergies, and immunizations.
• Managing internal and external medical records to ensure that accurate and complete data is available for patient appointments.
• Administering routine medications within the MA scope of practice.
• Collecting routine laboratory specimens, performing electrocardiograms, and obtaining vital signs.
• Identifying vaccination needs for specific patient populations.
• Performing clerical tasks including answering phones, scheduling appointments, and communicating with other departments.
• Assisting in obtaining insurance prior authorizations.
