Assistant Director of SCORE

Reporting to the Assistant Dean and Director of SCORE, department in the Division of Student Affairs, the Assistant Director of SCORE is responsible for advancing student belonging, engagement, and confidence through intentional self-empowering and validating programming, strategic partnerships, and holistic support.

The Assistant Director of SCORE contributes to the overall programmatic operations and establishment of resources affiliated with SCORE. The Assistant Director will help lead institutional efforts to uplift students, serve as a mentor and advocate, and collaborate across The Claremont Colleges and Student Affairs to foster a campus climate of belonging and community accountability. The SCORE department is a student-centered space focused on social justice, community engagement, and supporting an accepting and open community.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Strategize, plan, and implement events and initiatives focused on student personal development, community-building, participation, and engagement. Support SCORE's signature events and contribute to monthly engagement programming.
  • Provide additional opportunities for collaboration to student organizations and groups aligned with SCORE's mission. Offer guidance on event planning, budgeting, and organizational development.
  • In consultation with the Assistant Dean and Director, co-manage the hiring, onboarding, supervision, and professional development of SCORE's student interns and staff.
  • Serve as the primary contact for SCORE's digital and written communications. Maintain the office's website, develop outreach materials, and co-manage SCORE's social media presence to promote engagement.
  • In consultation with the Assistant Dean and Director, work with Office of Institutional Research to develop and implement assessment model for departmental programs and initiatives.
  • Participate in the Student Affairs on-call rotation, respond to student concerns, and complete relevant trainings to support crisis response and campus-wide student care.
  • Participate in Student Affairs staff meetings, trainings, and retreats.
  • Remain flexible and responsive to emergent student needs and broader campus dynamics.
  • Contribute to the culture of care and accountability across departments and student-serving initiatives.
  • Assist in managing the departmental budget with a focus on responsibility and fairness. Track and analyze spending for programs and student workers, and support funding proposals and resource allocation based on that analysis.
  • Coordinate usage and maintenance of the SCORE college-owned vehicle and contribute to SCORE space operations. Support office technology and accessibility improvements.
  • Serve as a model of humility and advocate for positive and meaningful progress within campus structures to support students.
  • Partner with Scripps students, faculty, and staff and across the Claremont Colleges to develop programming that advances SCORE's mission and values. Serve on campus and consortia committees relevant to student support, involvement, and social justice.
  • Work with consortia partners to expand upon existing network of support for students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of SCORE and Scripps College's evolving institutional priorities.
  • Actively supports Scripps College's Principles of Community and Institutional Values.

FIRST-GENERATION PROGRAMS :

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive program supporting students including orientation experiences, academic workshops, social gatherings, and campus navigation resources.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate peer mentors who serve as student leaders in the First-Gen program. Support their leadership development and ensure alignment with SCORE's values and goals.
  • Serve as a visible and trusted advisor to students; provide individualized guidance on navigating academic, social, financial, and other difficult transitions they may encounter throughout their college experience.
  • Plan and facilitate workshops, dialogue spaces, and leadership trainings focused on strategies for success, social justice, and a sense campus belonging.
  • Collaborate with faculty, academic support offices, and other departments to develop strategies for supporting students in and out of the classroom.
  • In partnership with the Assistant Dean and the Office of Institutional Research, design and implement program assessment tools; use qualitative and quantitative data to inform decisions and communicate impact.
  • REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES :

  • Demonstrated awareness of issues related to students with non-traditional backgrounds and associated social justice issues, especially within higher education contexts.
  • Ability to work effectively and compassionately with students, faculty, and staff from many backgrounds.
  • Exceptional time management, organizational skills, and acute attention to detail in fast-paced and evolving environments.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to build rapport and collaborate across departments.
  • Proficiency in project design and management, with a creative and solutions-oriented approach to program development.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and priorities simultaneously while exercising sound judgment and discretion.
  • Familiarity with the principles and limitations of confidentiality, and ability to respond to sensitive matters with tact and professionalism.
  • Comfortable receiving and incorporating constructive feedback; able to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Experience supervising and / or advising student staff and student leaders (preferred).
  • Knowledge of how patterns of exclusion for a variety of reasons can shape experiences of students in academic and social spaces (preferred).
  • Self-motivated and comfortable working with minimal supervision, with a commitment to student development and community engagement.
  • Technological proficiency, including Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and web-based communication platforms.
  • Availability to work some evenings and occasional weekends as needed for programs, events, or student support.
  • QUALIFICATION STANDARDS :

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE :

    Bachelor's degree required in a relevant field or any other combination of education, training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and ability to perform the job. Master's degree in relevant field is preferred.

    Minimum 2-year previous experience working in a college or university setting, including supervising and / or advised students is preferred.

    Experience working with non-traditional student populations, which could include (but would not be limited to) racially or ethnically minoritized, immigrant, disabled, first-generation, and low-income students.

    HOURS & CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS :

    This is a regular status, full-time, benefits eligible, exempt position.

    The regular hours for this position are 8 : 00 a.m.-5 : 00 p.m. Monday-Friday. Hours may vary due to needs of the College or department.

    Salary rate range : $68,640.00-$72,000.00 annualized. The salary rate of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY :

    Supervises student employees.
