Position Summary :

The University of California, Irvine Police Department is a 24 hour, 365 days per year law enforcement agency that provides contemporary law enforcement services including patrol, traffic, investigations, community policing, crime prevention and suppression, and site security services to a daily population of more than 65,000 people at the University's Irvine campus and the University of California, Irvine Medical Centers located in Irvine and Orange, California.

Police officers protect the lives and property of the campus community members, including students, staff, faculty, patients, and visitors, respond to medical emergencies, crimes in progress, calls for service, quality of life issues, and other law enforcement and campus security issues.

Under the direction of a Police Sergeant, a Lateral Police Officer is a journeyman level specification having completed the P.

O.S.T. Basic Academy training program and have been or are currently employed by a law enforcement agency within two years of the date of appointment.

Incumbents perform under the direct supervision of a field training officer and generally do not perform solo police officer duties independently until the successful completion of the field training program.

Following completion of training, the Police Officer is expected to perform regular law enforcement duties including foot, bicycle, and / or vehicle patrol of the University of California properties (campus, medical center, residential areas, and off-campus affiliated properties / areas), investigate and prepare preliminary investigation reports, issue citations, make arrests, assist in the prosecution of violators of the law, provide crime prevention information and serve as a proactive resource to a uniquely diverse community.

Sworn personnel must adhere to rules and regulations, orders, and departmental procedures and policies. Sworn personnel report promptly, through the chain of command, any violation of University-wide policies and procedures, criminal statutes, or any other misbehavior committed by another employee that may affect the department, the University, or the public, initiation of police action as necessary.

Sworn personnel are responsible for the proper maintenance, use, and operation of facilities, materials, supplies, and assigned equipment.

Promote University Police morale, work varied hours, and perform tasks as assigned by a ranking officer. May also work as part of a security detail with civilian and other law enforcement agencies at University and athletic events.

Have the opportunity to participate in a number of assignments such as bicycle patrol, various training / instructor positions, field training officer, detectives, K9, and corporal.

This position requires that the incumbent maintain training and certification standards mandated by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.

O.S.T.). Must be able to maintain a calm and professional manner in assisting persons under varied circumstances, both critical and routine in nature.

Must analyze information critically to assess the nature of the call and assign priorities. Must process the ability to make independent decisions under broad, general supervision regarding the use of available resources in life-threatening situations.

These decisions are usually made while under extreme pressure and with no direct supervision. Ability to use precise phrases and write in a logical, concise, and chronological manner.

Must be able to learn Orange County Communications radio codes and commonly-encountered California Criminal and Vehicle code sections, City ordinances, and University of California enforcement codes.

Must demonstrate the ability to work as a team member, capable of communicating effectively with colleagues in a high-pressure environment.

  • Make traffic stops and issues warnings, citations, and arrests as necessary; checks vehicles and observes vehicle occupants;
  • investigates scenes of vehicle accidents, provides emergency medical care as necessary, directs traffic and arranges for clearing of roadway, interviews drivers and witnesses, and prepares reports;
  • special events, and other emergency or congested situations; serves warrants and subpoenas; interview victims, complainants, and witnesses;
  • interrogate suspects; gather and preserve evidence; receive, search, and book prisoners; fingerprint and transport prisoners;

testify and present evidence in court. Attend briefings and training sessions; perform routine maintenance on assigned patrol vehicles, firearms, and other equipment.

Assists the public and answers questions; administers first aid and responds to calls for medical assistance; establishes and maintains good relationships with the general public.

Contacts and cooperates with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the investigation of crimes and the apprehension of offenders.

  • As assigned, may act as a training officer for new Police Officers; may serve as field supervisor on individual calls requiring special attention;
  • or conduct background investigations. As assigned, makes presentations before a variety of public groups to promote crime prevention activities and enhancing public understanding of Police Department activities;

serves as liaison to various campus and medical center groups and schools. Must be able to assume the immediate responsibility of receiving and relaying information and taking actions that may affect the safety of lives and property in and around the University and Medical Center

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $44.19 - $53.45 (Hourly Rate). The Full Salary Range for the salary grade this position is assigned to is $44.

19 - $55.57 (Hourly Rate).

Required :

  • Must be currently employed, or has been employed within the last two years, at a California law enforcement agency that falls within Penal Code 830.1(a-c) or 830.2 (a-c).
  • High-school graduate (or possess G.E.D. certificate).
  • Must possess a valid California Driver s License and participate in D.M.V. pull-notice program.
  • Ability to understand, read, write, and speak English, using correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Ability to use precise phrases and write in a logical, concise, and chronological manner.
  • Familiarity with standard alphabetical, numerical and chronological filing systems.
  • Knowledge of radio operations, recording equipment operations, and computer equipment operations.
  • Possesses a valid California POST Basic Certificate.

Special Conditions Required :

  • Must be able to work shift work, including day and night shifts, weekends, or holidays.
  • Must be able to learn Orange County Communications radio codes and commonly-encountered California Criminal and Vehicle code sections, City ordinances and University of California enforcement codes.
  • Must possess the ability to operate; police car, police radio, handgun and other weapons as required, baton, handcuffs, breathalyzer, first aid equipment and other related equipment as assigned.
  • Must meet all requirements of eligibility in accordance with SB 2 ad SB 960 and be compliant with California Government Code sections 1029 & 1031 prior to employment.
  • Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE Must be able to operate a Police Fleet vehicle Graduated from a California P.

O.S.T. certified Basic law enforcement training academy.

  • Be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment. Legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Pass a polygraph examination Complete / pass an extensive background check, medical examination, and psychological examination in compliance with (POST) standards.
  • No Felony Convictions or other legal restrictions on the ability to carry firearms or to perform other work responsibilities.
  • Complete the U.C.I. Police Department Field Training program.
