At Houston Methodist the ProfessionalPractice Leader position serves as a consultant and subject matterclinician for a service line / specialty area functioning at theExpert level of Benners model of clinical practice.

TheProfessional Practice Leader position provides education anddevelopment to the direct patient care staff in addition to beingaccountable for the care outcomes of a service line or clinicalpopulation.

This position leads and coordinates interprofessionalactivities focusing on clinical practice consultation education andresearch incorporating evidence into practice.

The ProfessionalPractice Leader position uses expert communication skills to serveas care advocate and to mentor and coach staff in clinical andprofessional practice.

This position assumes an advanced leadershiprole in analyzing systems to anticipate / reduce risk and improvepatient safety / quality.

Responsibilities for the ProfessionalPractice Leader position include contributions at the unit andhousewide levels with expectation to collaborate / manage / lead onsystemwide and nationalinitiatives.

PEOPLE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

Promotesinterprofessional collaboration in patient care providingleadership to maintain a supportive and healthy work environment.

Partners with department leadership to define priorities of serviceline / specialty department. Builds partnerships across the systemand strives for consensus inpractice.

Partners incollaboration with leadership of the service lines / specialty areasto promote staff accountability and effective decisionmaking whichincludes coaching to provide feedback in an effective way.

Empowersnurses to seek feedback from peers informally or throughestablished preceptor or mentor relationships. Leadsinterprofessional teams to achieve organizational goals throughinvolvement in sharedgovernance

Consults as thesubject matter expert and guides clinicians to available resourcesand policies on standards of care for their service line and / oracross departments.

Coaches clinicians utilizing effectivecommunication techniques in strategies to improve practice andpatient outcomes or changes inpractice.

SERVICE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

Indirectly affectspatient care through the bedside RN as their focus is on developingand ensuring they give quality care.

Promotes the transfer ofknowledge to practice ensuring that knowledge / training is carriedout and integrated into practice.

Validates effectiveness ofeducation on identifiedoutcomes.

  • Overseestransition to independent practice of clinicians. Develops timelyand efficient onboarding process orientation professionaldevelopment related to the service line and competencyrequirements.
  • Directs andmentors teams in implementing clinical projects and / or practicechanges. Evaluates outcome measures to adjust or reinforce practicechanges.

QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

Identifies gaps inpractice through competency assessment observation or availablemeasures. Plans and implements strategies to address gaps throughobservation of employee and their practice audits and metrics thatmay indicate a gap or need for improvement.

Provides guidance tostaff in clinical project development and management using the PDCAprocess and supporting the Pathway to Excellence / Magnetjourney.

  • Collaborates withQuality team regarding patient safety events. Engages in actionplanning including evidencebased practice guidelines anddisseminating necessary practicechanges.
  • Utilizesdashboards to maintain awareness of patient outcome measures andsystem patient care metrics partnering with clinical areas toidentify needs plan implement and evaluate an intervention topositively impact the quality of patient care.

Drives nursesensitive indicator performance by using data to identify gaps andplan interventions to meet and exceed expectations.

Provideseducation to support improvement of the patientexperience.

Operationalizequality initiatives by maintaining awareness and knowledge ofapplicable regulatory or accrediting body standards and theapplicability to the clinical area.

Provides leadership in designimplementation and evaluation of process improvementinitiatives.

FINANCEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Builds aproject plan for practice change while considering financialimplications. Identifies costcontainment measures as applicable inclinical areas to quantify costsavings.
  • Contributes tounit plans for resource utilization and capital needs incorporatingfinancial evaluation within project management.

Drives strategiesto meeting department financial target on hospital and / or unitbasedscorecard.

GROWTH / INNOVATIONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Engages thelearner for continued professional growth while promoting andsupporting transition of staff along the Clinical Career Path.

Assists in cross training and preparing staff to transition acrossclinical settings (e.g. Obs to ED L&D ST to ORcrosstraining).

Appliestheories of change to support staff and promote evidencebaseddecisionmaking. Cultivates a climate of clinical inquiry toestablish an environment where staff want to become involved inresearch and evidencebased practice.

Guides staff in the creationand submission of clinical abstracts posters andpresentations.

Championsand leads innovative initiatives to obtain serviceline / departmentspecific focus or specialty designationsrecognitions or awards.

Collaborates across the hospital and systemin implementing change as appropriate maintaining awareness ofcurrent changes in practice standards and applies to clinicalpractice setting.

Completes and updates the individual developmentplan (IDP) on an ongoing basis.

EDUCATION

  • Mastersdegree
  • Master of Sciencein Nursingpreferred
  • Clinical NurseLeader or Clinical Nurse Specialistpreferred

WORKEXPERIENCE

Five yearsclinical nursing experience with three years in a clinicalspecialty

LICENSES ANDCERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • RNRegistered Nurse Texas State Licensure and / or Compact StateLicensure within 90 days or
  • RNTemp RegisteredNurse Temporary State Licensure within 90 daysand
  • BLS Basic Life Support (AHA)and
  • Magnet ANCC Recognized Certification inapplicable specialty area

KNOWLEDGESKILLS ANDABILITIES
