Job description

Opportunity Culture Consultant (Fall / Winter 2025-26)

Opportunity Culture Consultant (Fall / Winter 2025-26)

We are currently building a pool of strong candidates for consulting roles supporting the Opportunity Culture initiative at Public Impact. Our projected workload for Fall-Winter 2025-26 is growing, and we are now recruiting qualified candidates for anticipated start dates between September 2025 and January 2026

We will review applications on a rolling basis with benchmark deadlines of : July 13, August 3, September 14, and September 28. Early applications are strongly encouraged, even for January starts.

Public Impact is a national education management consulting firm , based in Chapel Hill, N.C. Our mission is to improve education dramatically for all students, especially students whose needs have not yet been well met. We collaborate with teachers and school and system leaders to implement changes that will help the students they serve, and believe that if we focus on a core set of promising strategies for change, we and our partners and clients can make bold improvements for all students, with long-term financial sustainability and success.

Toward that end, we :

  • Extend the reach of excellent teaching to all students, through Opportunity Culture School Design , an initiative to redesign staffing, pay and instruction for higher-growth learning and educator satisfaction. Multiple third-party studies have shown that students supported by Multi-Classroom Leader educators (an Opportunity Culture role) add an extra half year of learning annually, on average. Teachers in these schools are about twice as likely to recommend teaching compared to other teachers nationally, and teacher turnover and vacancies have declined in studied schools. Schools in seventeen states and Washington, D.C. now have Opportunity Culture schools.
  • Use data, research, and curious problem-solving to create and spread high-impact innovations and solutions for education policy and management challenges.

Role

Consultants work on teams facilitating Opportunity Culture school transformations, using Multi-Classroom Leader roles, Team Reach roles, advanced paraprofessional positions, and other innovative strategies to boost student learning and educator pay. Consultants support school and district design teams made up of teachers and administrators to plan, implement and improve new roles, schedules, budgets, and instructional changes, including small-group tutoring. Team members may also work on other projects, such as delivering professional learning experiences for OC educators, coaching teacher-leaders and principals, designing innovations, and creating / editing materials. Career advancement includes increasingly complex and large project team leadership, people management, increasing technical expertise to improve results, and outreach to serve more students nationally.

Consultants should expect to :

  • Guide educators and other leaders to design and implement Opportunity Culture School Design and instructional excellence, with significant support and guidance from experienced Public Impact teammates.
  • Learn from and be developed by colleagues with substantial experience collaborating with educators to implement school design models that achieve high-growth student learning, field-leading teacher satisfaction, and world-class client satisfaction ratings.
  • Support clients to design and improve Opportunity Culture implementation by following certification and validation standards correlated with student learning.
  • Contribute to sales efforts to reach more students with Opportunity Culture models by identifying potential new clients and funding sources, drafting scopes of work, participating in sales calls, and other outreach efforts.
  • Use meticulously-honed materials and steps, edited annually to reflect data, research, and PI's decade+ of experience collaborating with educators to redesign schools.
  • Contribute to ongoing innovation for stronger results and processes.
  • Participate in and later lead collaborative, diverse client / colleague teams of increasing size and complexity.
  • Present Public Impact work accurately and influentially, in writing and speaking.
  • Produce excellent technical work that impacts students and educators positively.
  • Qualifications :

We are recruiting for entry / early-mid-level roles only at this time

, because we have an exceptional advanced professional and leadership corps, which new entrants will join as they learn and OC grows.

  • Either of the following :
  • 5+ years of teaching or other relevant, school-based or service-oriented experience and demonstrated leadership competencies;

  • OR 2-4 years of teaching or other relevant experience, plus 1-2 years of a leadership role such as instructional coach, or similar;
  • OR 2-4 years of teaching or other relevant experience, plus formal training in leadership and / or systems change through a graduate degree in policy, management, law or a combination of these.
  • Mission-alignment : Strong commitment to improving academic outcomes for students.
  • Achievement : Demonstrated ability to lead and implement change or improvement, with a bias for impact.
  • Impact & Influence : Demonstrated ability to influence a wide variety of people and engage with others positively; has led others to make specific changes through formal or informal leadership.
  • Teamwork : Demonstrated ability to collaborate in teams with diverse members.
  • Quality Focus : Eager to give and receive feedback to produce outstanding work.
  • Communication : Able to communicate complex ideas simply. Strong communicator through written and verbal work.
  • Flexibility : Ability to juggle multiple projects and do what it takes to accomplish goals.
  • Analytical & Critical Thinking : Ability to interpret research with level-headed, critical eye and grasp major concepts in field.
  • Impact Orientation : Acts deliberately based on cost-benefit analysis, with a bias towards positive impacts on students and teachers.
  • Demonstrated interest in our mission through paid or volunteer work.
  • Location : Work from home in approved U.S. states. Most team members currently live in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, N.C. area or in the Charlotte, N.C. area; pay levels are set for N.C.

Public Impact provides partial reimbursement for internet and phone, as well as other supports to help team members work productively at home.

Travel : Travel by plane and car required; must have reliable car for serving clients within driving distance. Consultants can expect to travel by car and plane occasionally. The amount varies over the year but typically ranges from once a month to several days a week in peak OC design season (rarely on weekends). We anticipate that the upper end of this will be uncommon, because our service delivery uses a hybrid approach to keep travel time in check.

Compensation : Total target starting pay range of $65,000 - $85,000, includes :

  • Base salary of approximately $60,000 - $78,000 (commensurate with qualifications and experience).
  • Target 10% firmwide annual bonus, dependent on teamwide performance on a variety of factors aligned with our goals for students and educators.
  • Standard consulting career path currently includes base salary up to $125,000 for consultants and project managers, with bonus + salary target of ~$137,500. Pay progression is even higher for permanent consulting team managers responsible for cross-team performance / development and for highly advanced consulting project leaders leading large portfolios; growth projections include dozens of these roles.
  • Benefits : Current benefits include the following :

  • Health Insurance : Public Impact pays 100% of monthly premiums for a high-deductible plan with a health savings account or approximately 85% of monthly premiums for a PPO 80 / 20 plan for employees and their children
  • Short Term Disability, Long-Term Disability and Term Life Insurance
  • Dental, Vision, Voluntary Life, Critical Illness, Accident Insurance, Dependent and Health Care FSAs
  • 401(k) : 3% automatic employer contribution
  • Flexible Personal Leave
  • Remote work setup with occasional opportunities to connect with colleagues in person at our office in Carrboro, N.C., at client sites, and / or co-working in areas where multiple PI employees reside
  • Position Classification : Full-time; Permanent; Exempt

Work Hours : Typically ranging from 40-45 hours per week, on average, occasionally more; team members work primarily during Eastern Time Zone hours. We seek efficiencies that keep work hours in check and have policies that allow flexible hours for small personal matters without using paid time off.

TO APPLY : Please complete the online application and attach the following :

  • Resumé , highlighting skills and experiences related to the job described above.
  • Cover letter , including a description of why you are interested in working at Public Impact
  • Two writing / work samples of your choosing that best demonstrate the skills, mindsets, and / or contributions you have achieved in previous work, school, or extracurricular experiences that you would bring to our team. The writing / work samples may include submissions such as a memo, lesson / project plan, academic paper, published work such as a blog post or article, a video recording of a presentation / talk / meeting, or any other submission that you feel would benefit our hiring team in understanding your potential to contribute to the Public Impact mission. Writing samples may not be edited by others, or written using AI, though you may have used AI for research and citation checking.
  • NOTE : At this time, it is our policy not to hire Multi-Classroom Leader educators or principals leading Opportunity Culture schools in districts where we are currently working, or educators in Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools or Chatham County Schools.
