The hiring range of this position is listed. The pay for this position is generally up to 12.5% over minimum based on experience.

Pay based on experience :

Lifeguard I : $15.81 (Class Spec 7360)

Lifeguard II : $16.99 (Class Spec 7260)

GENERAL PURPOSE :

Lifeguard I and II performs routine and on-demand lifeguard duties for the City's Parks and Recreation Department. This position accomplishes a variety of specialized tasks such as maintaining water quality, cleanliness, and safety at City pools and ensuring that patrons using the pool are following safety rules and regulations.

Work is performed under close supervision - the incumbent is assigned duties according to specified procedures and receives detailed instructions;

work is checked frequently, through observation, review of results achieved, and accuracy of work assigned.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

Clean pool and pool ground areas as required.

Regulate water activities.

Perform rescues of swimmers in trouble, supply CPR and emergency first aid until assistance arrives.

Provide support for programs and events.

Provide swimming instruction and lead aquatic programs.

Operate automated program and facility registration software; register customers for programs and rentals, collect fees, run reports, maintain user records, and verify data input.

Assist with operation and oversight of concessions area.

Perform other work as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :

General knowledge of accepted life-saving techniques.

General knowledge of occupational hazards, safety rules, and practices of the work.

General knowledge of water chemistry and pool maintenance.

Skill and proficiency in swimming.

Ability to handle multiple tasks efficiently and effectively.

Ability to deal tactfully and firmly with the public.

Ability to work weekends and evening hours.

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, supervisors, city officials, and the general public.

Ability to communicate information tactfully and impartially, both in person and in writing with all staff, city officials, and the general public.

Ability to demonstrate proficiency in the City of Winter Park Core Competencies.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and keep accurate records.

This position is performed with general knowledge- the incumbent is generally familiar with information contained in relevant source documents or information in a particular subject field;

and has the ability to use relevant sources to obtain specific or supplemental information.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Lifeguard I

High school Diploma, equivalent, or active enrollment. An associate's degree or some college degree is preferred.

Lifeguard II

High school Diploma, equivalent, or active enrollment and Water Safety Instructor Certificate and an associate's degree or some college are preferred.

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which provide the necessary knowledge, skills abilities, and other competencies required for the position may be considered.

NOTE : All certifications must be current at the time of application, and must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.

Physical

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force repetitively to move objects;

work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping.

Ability to ascend / descend stairs, scaffolds, and ladders.

Ability to traverse about a variety of environments and obstacles throughout the city, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Ability to position oneself to work in confined spaces.

Ability to manipulate objects, demonstrate small, precise movements, and operate necessary pool equipment repetitively or continuously.

Environmental

Tasks may require frequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions including inclement weather, sun, extreme temperatures, odors, dirt and dust, loud noises, and hazardous chemicals, etc.

Sensory

Tasks require the manipulation of objects and demonstration of small, precise movements, the ability to detect and distinguish various features of one's surroundings, and the ability to effectively communicate and exchange information with others.
