JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS :

The Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences at Penn State University is seeking applications for the role of Director of Fermentation Facility.

This is a non-tenure track position at the rank of Assistant / Associate Research Professor , and will direct the CSL Behring Fermentation Facility.

This is a term appointment funded for one year from date of hire, with excellent possibility of renewal.

Responsibilities : Duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following :

• Direct, provide training, develop new and execute existing protocols, and aid faculty in the production of training materials.
• Operate, maintain, and provide user training on all instrumentation within the Core Facility.
• Assist users; understand quality of their material before and during data collection.
• Supervise (goal-setting, periodic performance) a staff of two and students co-opted to work within the Facility.
• Maintain approved use rates and liaise with external users in the creation of Academic Research Service Orders
• In conjunction with others, they will devise, modify and optimize protocols specific to sample and / or analytical goals
• Record and report experimental results in a timely and thorough manner and communicate well with other PIs and research staff.
• Leadership in workforce development efforts with Penn State’s Center of Excellence in Industrial Biotechnology, specifically production and delivery of course materials.

Education and Experience : The successful candidate must have a PhD with exceptional hands-on experience of all aspects of microbiology.

Candidates must have demonstrated experience with operating microbial fermenters, pilot plant equipment and downstream processing of biological products.

Candidates should have a strong publication record, with a track record of obtaining research funding.

Exceptionally qualified candidates must be highly motivated with demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral).

Evidence of project and time management skills is essential. Additionally, it is expected that selected candidates will contribute to both scientific papers originating from these Core Facilities, and to existing and future efforts to obtain further funding through a growing portfolio of research grants and center grant proposals.

Attendance at conferences and presentation of research findings will be expected.
