Purpose Statement
The job of Head Coach is to design and implement the athletic program for the assigned sport(s) in accordance with applicable rules and regulations; supervise coaching personnel and students; use sound instructional techniques; serve as a positive role model; and act as a liaison for the school and program with other schools, the community, and organizations. Individuals are assigned to the position for the assigned sport(s) and oversee all aspects of the respective athletic program(s).
This job reports to the Athletic Director.
Essential Functions
- Assesses student athletes to provide feedback on performance and determine team placement.
- Attends meetings, workshops, and conferences to receive and relay information related to the role.
- Coordinates activities (e.g., parent orientations, recognition events, banquets) to inform participants about the program and acknowledge accomplishments.
- Develops team and individual practice regimes (strength, speed, agility, nutrition, injury prevention) to improve performance.
- Develops game strategies and plans to prepare the team and athletes for competition.
- Guides other coaching personnel in instructional techniques, practice organization, and supervision guidelines.
- Identifies program needs and recommends expenditures for activities, equipment, and supplies.
- Implements practice schedules and related events to ensure efficient program operation.
- Instructs student athletes to promote growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
- Maintains records (statistics, insurance, permissions, emergency information, schedules, inventories) to comply with district, conference, state requirements and for reporting when needed.
- Monitors student athletes' academic eligibility and provides intervention (counseling, tutoring) as needed to maintain eligibility.
- Oversees assistant coaches, student managers, volunteers, etc., providing direction and supervision.
- Promotes the program through off-season clinics, information on skill camps, and community engagement.
- Responds to inquiries from students, parents, school personnel, media, and college representatives with information and guidance.
- Keeps the Athletic Director informed of issues impacting the program (e.g., liability concerns, parent concerns).
- Provides appropriate and prudent supervision for all athletes and students involved in the program.
- Explains and discusses the PVUSD Athletic Code of Conduct with all athletes.
- Maintains high standards of personal conduct and serves as a role model for athletes.
- Ensures that all coaches involved with the program, paid or volunteer, are cleared through PVUSD Human Resources.
Other Functions
Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Responsibilities include working under limited supervision following standardized practices, directing others within a small unit, and utilizing resources from other units. There is ongoing opportunity to impact the organization's services.
Work Environment
Physical demands include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling; some climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling; fine finger dexterity. Typical distribution : 20% sitting, 40% walking, 40% standing. Occasional exposure to temperature extremes and risk of injury or illness.
Experience
Job-related experience is required.
Education
High school diploma or equivalent.
Equivalency
Required Testing; Certificates and Licenses : Valid Arizona Teaching Certificate or Valid Arizona Substitute Certificate or NFHS Level 2 Certificate (National Federation of State High Schools).
Clearances
Criminal Background Clearance; IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.
