Senior Director for Applied AI Institute

UVU is seeking a Senior Director for the Applied AI Institute (AAII) to lead our groundbreaking work at the intersection of AI, education, and community impact. More than a leadership role-it's an opportunity to transform how AI is integrated into teaching, research, workforce development, and student engagement across Utah and beyond.
Summary Of Responsibilities
- Direct all activities and functions of the AAII, ensuring alignment with UVU's academic mission and strategic goals.
- Lead cross-campus collaborations to integrate AI into curricula, research, and student support services.
- Serve as the primary liaison to internal and external advisory boards, executive sponsors, and institutional stakeholders.
- Oversee the recruitment and coordination of faculty clusters across colleges to promote AI literacy and discipline-specific curriculum development.
- Partner with the Office of Teaching and Learning OTL and People & Culture to define and implement tiered AI training programs for faculty and staff.
- Facilitate dissemination of faculty expertise through conferences, demos, and statewide initiatives.
- Collaborate with internal and external partners to deliver AI projects that support workforce development and community impact.
- Support AI-focused conferences and events to promote public understanding and engagement with AI technologies.
- Develop and share academic resources across Utah's higher education system.
- Support the development and operation of a dedicated AI student lab.
- Support the integration of AI tools into curriculum and curriculum support tools.
- Promote student involvement in AI-related research and experiential learning opportunities.
- Evaluate student outcomes and feedback to inform future initiatives.
- Supervise institute staff, including project coordinators and administrative support.
- Monitor budgets, prepare reports, and ensure compliance with institutional policies.
- Represent AAII in university-wide planning and reporting processes.
Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications
Graduation from an accredited institution with a master's degree, plus four years of experience related to the Summary of Duties of the position, or bachelor's degree, plus eight years related to the Summary of Duties of the position, OR any combination of higher education and / or experience totaling ten years.
Preferred Qualifications :
Master's or Doctorate degree (Ph.D., Ed.D., or equivalent) in artificial intelligence, computer science, education, or a related interdisciplinary field.Demonstrated experience in AI integration within educational settings, including curriculum development, faculty training, and student support.Proven track record of leading cross-functional teams, managing budgets, and building partnerships across academia, industry, and community organizations.Experience with grant writing, fundraising, and strategic planning in higher education or nonprofit environments.Familiarity with higher education and workforce development initiatives is a plus.Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Knowledge
Understanding of artificial intelligence technologies, including current trends in machine learning, natural language processing, and AI applications in education.Knowledge of higher education systems, instructional design, and faculty development strategies.Familiarity with interdisciplinary curriculum development and integration of emerging technologies into academic programs.Experience in managing academic initiatives that span multiple departments and stakeholder groups.Understanding of workforce development needs related to AI and the ability to align academic programming with industry expectations.Knowledge of grant writing, fundraising, and partnership development in both public and private sectors.Skills
Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and foster collaboration across academic units and external partners.Strong strategic planning and project management skills, with experience in launching and scaling educational initiatives.Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to present complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.Skilled in data-informed decision-making and performance evaluation of academic initiatives.Abilities
