Job Description and Duties

Limited Term 12 months; may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

Under the general clinical direction of the Chief Physician & Surgeon, and direct supervision of Correctional Health Services Administrator II at the California Health Care Facility (CHCF), The Speech Pathologist II, following all established guidelines, policy and procedure, and rules and regulations, is a senior level employee, who plans, organizes, and supervises speech therapy clinics for inmates and coordinates therapy or instructional programs for inmate or unit employees.

  • Primary care services include planing, organizing, and directing institution-wide screening and evaluation of voice, language, swallowing, speech and language disability;
  • providing individual and group speech therapy to residents; conducting in-service training for lay and professional workers in recognition and treatment of speech, voice, and language disabilities;

attending clinics and maintaining notes; developing and directing research projects; supervising the work of a small staff of Speech Pathologists I and Speech Pathologist License Applicants and performing other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a valid license to practice speech pathology in California as determined by the Speech Pathology and Audiology Examining Committee of the California Board of Medical Quality Assurance.

Includes possession of a Master's Degree in Speech Pathology or deemed equivalent as defined by the Speech Pathology and Audiology Examining Committee.

Applicants who are in the process of securing approval of their qualifications by the Speech Pathology and Audiology Examining Committee will be admitted to the examination but they must meet all the legal requirements in order to be eligible for appointment.

and Either I One year of experience performing the duties of a Speech Pathologist I or Speech Pathologist I, Departments of Mental Health and Developmental Services, in California state service.

Or II

Two years of experience in the diagnosis and correction of speech disorders. (Possession of an earned doctorate in speech pathology, speech correction, or a closely related field may be substituted for the required experience.)

Candidates new to CDCR or the Division of Juvenile Justice are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan Fingerprinting, and Tuberculosis testing prior to appointment followed by department annual Tuberculosis testing / evaluation thereafter.
