We are seeking a creative, talented, Structural Engineer III who shares our commitment to excellence and innovation. You will join a team of structural engineers working in a multi-discipline, collaborative, and engaging environment in the pursuit of innovative solutions. The ideal candidate will be skilled in structural design, committed to quality, able to work independently and in a team environment, an enthusiastic mentor to other engineers, and able to manage work on multiple concurrent projects.
General responsibilities include but are not limited to the following :
- Perform structural engineering duties as a lead project engineer on multi-discipline building design projects of varying size and scope.
- Coordinate structural work with other design disciplines and lead the production of contract documents
- Collaborate with a multi-discipline team of architects and engineers
- Coordinate the work of specialty consultants
- Prepare and validate scopes of work
- Communicate effectively
- Direct and supervise the work of structural engineers and technicians
- Comply with quality assurance practices and procedures
- Work with and respond to direction from the Department Head, Project Managers, Design Managers, and company management
- Mentor and train junior structural staff
Project responsibilities include but are not limited to the following :
Prepare scope and fee proposals for the structural portion of projectsConduct project code analysis and determine design loads and criteriaSelect and layout gravity and lateral load-resisting systems, including consideration of alternative systemsPerform design and analysis for structural framing and foundations, gravity and lateral systemsPrepare accurate, complete, coordinated, and code-compliant structural drawings and specifications for schematic, design development, and construction document submittals.Develop details of building system componentsDevelop and coordinate discipline specificationsReview calculations and all work products produced by structural engineers assigned to the project, particularly analysis and design assumptions and analytical modelsReview all work products produced by support staff assigned to the projectIncorporate internal QC and client review comments into the project documentsParticipate in client meetings and present structural project informationReview and evaluate cost estimates for constructionReview and respond to CA submittals and contractor RFI. Perform construction site visits and inspections.Attend project meetings (may require occasional local or regional travel)Perform discipline QA / QC reviewAdhere to discipline budget and scheduleEducation, Technology, and Experience
Graduation from an ABET-accredited (4-year minimum) engineering program in one of the following disciplines :Civil Engineering (structural emphasis)Civil and Environmental Engineering (structural emphasis)Civil Engineering Technology (structural emphasis)Architectural Engineering (structural emphasis)Post-graduate degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering may be given additional considerationMust be a licensed Professional Engineer or Structural Engineer in at least one US state, preferably in Virginia or North Carolina.Understanding of sustainable design principles and design practices with LEED AP or LEED Green Associate accreditation preferredAdditional certifications are encouraged to reflect personal growth in the profession and an ever-increasing knowledge base to enhance the design and documentation processActive participation in NSPE, ASCE, NCSEA, or other related professional organizations is desirableNCEES Record to facilitate licensure through reciprocity is desirableEligibility to obtain security credentials for base access (DBIDS, etc) is requiredMust be able to effectively utilize current company software programs for word processing, e-mail, accounting, and information management.Working familiarity with analysis, design, and production software to a point of being able to understand the capabilities and limitations of the programs and interact with the support staff in their use of the software is required.Working familiarity with Autodesk Revit is preferred.Candidate must have at 5-12 years of significant design and practice experience with a Structural Engineering or multi-discipline Architectural & Engineering firm. Experience with concrete and steel design is required, experience with masonry and wood design is desirable.Experience as a Structural Engineer in federal, state, municipal, commercial, higher education or similar projects is desirable.Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

We have selected two as common days in the office to nurture collaboration and innovation and to support learning and growth through engagement with colleagues. We are asking everyone to be present on Mondays and Thursdays, with a required third day that will provide additional flexibility and be set established between you and your supervisor (with consideration given to your project team members and clients). Our hope is that this schedule will offer the work-life balance that is desired by all, while providing consistent opportunities for face-to-face collaboration and mentorship.
Physical Requirements
Work is sedentary and often performed in an office setting. Work area is lighted, heated, and ventilated. This position may require extended periods of standing, sitting, as well as some repetitive movements, bending and lifting of minimal weight.
