Scope of Position:

Provide support, resources, supervision, and motivation to cabin leaders, as well as help with disciplinary concerns for campers. Guide cabin groups of 8-10 campers through successful participation in all aspects of the residential camp program.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum High School Graduate or equivalent required.
  • Preferred valid Driver’s License.
  • 2-3 seasons of summer camp experience or 1 year in equivalent work required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have valid or be capable of obtaining Oregon Food Handlers card.
  • Must have valid or be capable of obtaining AED, First Aid, and CPR Certification.
  • Preferred having knowledge in Child Development, Trauma Intervention, Children’s Psychology, Behavioral Management, etc.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Be a Christian with a strong, demonstrative commitment to following Jesus Christ, and biblical principles, who is enthusiastic, energetic, and creative in spiritual leadership.
  • Good character, integrity, and adaptability.
  • Detail-oriented, Self-starter, Team Player.
  • Ability to diffuse stressful situations with staff and campers.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and be comfortable working with a high degree of independence.
  • Possess leadership skills, with the ability to supervise, care for, and provide necessary guidance for staff and campers 24 hours a day.
  • Possess leadership skills, with the ability to plan, organize, and execute programs.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain poise under pressure.

  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards at all times.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Foster and nurture Christian faith and discipleship in visible, fruitful ways to, and with staff and campers.
  • Provide supervision, support, and motivation to all staff.
  • Lead a weekly devotion with Cabin Leaders.
  • Coordinate with the Nurse and leadership team for possible medical transportation as needed. May be asked to drive or accompany hospital transport of campers or staff.
  • Turn in all camper-related forms promptly, such as, but not limited to, seeker forms, incident forms, safety reports, Notice of Concern, and Observation Logs.
  • Provide a written weekly evaluation of Cabin Leaders, outlining their strengths and struggles, to the Program Assistant.
  • Set a good example for campers and others including language, cleanliness, punctuality, sportsmanship, and table manners.
  • Responsible for routine daily cleanliness of public and personal spaces.
  • Lead and/or assist in Staff Snack Evening, including but not limited to, food preparation, distribution and clean-up.
  • Participate and/or assist in all summer camp programs as requested , chapel, staff meetings, campfire, camp-wide games, night-watch, free-time, electives, rise and shine duty, etc.
  • May be required to serve as Break Day Supervisor for staff.
  • Last-day clean-up you will be responsible for the cleanliness of all living spaces and program areas under your assigned care.
  • Enforce respect for personal property, camp equipment, and facilities.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all staff, volunteers, and campers.
  • Enforce adherence to camp and Salvation Army policies and procedures.
  • Ensure and provide supervision and physical/emotional safety for campers and staff.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by Leadership.
  • Lead a daily Cabin Leader check in.

General Duties:

  • Lead and direct cabin leaders regarding assigned campers and activities, as well as teaching them skills to respond to specific needs or problems regarding campers.
  • May be required to step in as overnight cabin leader to provide relief or coverage of additional campers or sick staff.
  • Provide supervision, support, and motivation to cabin leaders.
  • Lead a weekly devotion with cabin leaders.
  • Help cabin leaders maintain safety and discipline with difficult campers.
  • Coordinate with leadership team members to determine if a child needs to be sent home.
  • Coordinate with the Nurse and leadership team for possible medical transportation as needed. May be asked to accompany hospital transport of campers or staff.
  • Turn in all camper-related forms promptly, such as, but not limited to, seeker forms, incident forms, safety reports, and Notice of Concern.
  • Provide a weekly evaluation of Cabin Leaders, outlining their strengths and struggles, to the Program Director.
  • Set a good example for campers and others including language, cleanliness, punctuality, sportsmanship, and table manners.
  • Responsible for routine daily cleanliness of cabin leaders’ cabin and personal spaces.
  • Responsible for final check out, at break day, of children’s cabins under your care.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, hike, and twist continuously for a long period.
  • Ability to grasp, push, and pull objects.
  • Physical ability to respond to a variety of situations. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • There may be phone and in-person contact with others from diverse backgrounds who may be angry, hostile, confused, or frustrated.
  • Working in a distinctively Christian environment.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases.
  • Work outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather.
  • Work around dust, odor, high noise levels, and bodily fluids.

MISCELLANEOUS:

The Salvation Army does have a dress code. This will be shared with you at the time of employment.

The candidate chosen for this position must have a valid driver’s license, have an acceptable driving record. The candidate will be required to pass a motor vehicle record check and the TSA Motor Vehicle training.
