Job description

Port Engineer

Job Summary
This hands-on leadership role requires overseeing critical maintenance and repair activities, ensuring vessels operate reliably and in strict compliance with all regulatory standards. Reporting directly to senior operations management, you will be at the forefront of maintaining a well-functioning, compliant, and performance-driven fleet.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise maintenance and repair activities for tugboats and associated marine equipment.
  • Coordinate with vessel crews, shipyards, and vendors to execute both planned and unplanned maintenance tasks.
  • Plan, schedule, and oversee drydock operations, including budget management, execution, and post-drydock follow-up.
  • Ensure vessel operations meet USCG, ABS, and internal safety and environmental standards.
  • Monitor vessel performance to proactively identify and resolve mechanical or operational issues.
  • Manage maintenance budgets, review invoices, and track repair costs to stay within financial targets.
  • Supervise and support engineering personnel and vessel engineers as necessary.
  • Maintain meticulous records of inspections, maintenance, and regulatory compliance activities.
  • Facilitate procurement of parts, materials, and third-party services to support vessel maintenance.
  • Collaborate closely with operations teams to minimize vessel downtime and maximize operational efficiency.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
  • Prior experience as a Port Engineer, Assistant Port Engineer, Chief Engineer, or similar leadership role in marine operations.
  • Strong background in tugboats, workboats, or small vessel operations.
  • Proven experience working with shipyards and marine vendors.
  • Familiarity with USCG regulations, ABS standards, and marine compliance requirements.
  • Hands-on mechanical troubleshooting skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership and coordination abilities.
  • Capacity to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
  • Budget management experience coupled with a cost-conscious approach.
  • Ability to solve problems and make effective decisions under pressure.
  • Willingness and ability to travel locally to vessels, shipyards, and port facilities.
  • Flexible schedule to support vessel operations, including after-hours support as needed.
  • TWIC card (or the ability to obtain one) is required.
