Job description

Principal - High School

To effectively lead, supervise, and implement educational programs to foster the optimal learning and growth of each student.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree
  • Principal, Principal as Instructional Leader or Mid-Management Certificate
  • TEXAS-Teacher Evaluation Support System (T-TESS)
  • TEXAS-Principal Evaluation Support System (T-PESS)
  • Advancing Educational Leadership (AEL) or Instructional Leadership Development (ILD Grandfathered) Certificate
  • Minimum of five (5) years of combined experience of an Assistant Principal or District Coordinator position and above
  • Working knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • The ability to evaluate instructional programs and teaching effectiveness
  • The ability to manage budget and personnel and coordinate campus functions
  • The ability to explain policy, procedures, and data
  • Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
  • Prior experience in instructional leadership roles; and
  • Other qualifications deemed necessary by the Board of Trustees

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Under the direction of the Superintendent, assumes administrative responsibility and provides instructional leadership for the school unit. This includes overseeing student discipline, planning, implementing, supervising, and evaluating the educational program by effectively utilizing the talents and expertise of all qualified personnel within the school unit.
  2. Collaborates with faculty to develop and implement an instructional program aligned with school policies, procedures, and the district's educational philosophy.
  3. Collaborates with the faculty, to develop and maintain an organizational pattern which provides for planning and adapting curriculum to the needs of individual students, placing each student in an atmosphere most conducive to learning, and providing an adequate evaluation and guidance program that will meet all accreditation standards.
  4. Conducts targeted observations based on analysis of formative student assessment data and follows up observations with coaching that leads to rapid improvement in teacher practice and student learning.
  5. Develops and maintains a campus based well-equipped instructional resource center that supports teachers' effective utilization of available resources to enhance the learning experience for each individual student.
  6. Organizes and administers a program of extracurricular activities to develop the special interests and abilities of students.
  7. Maintains general oversight of the physical education and athletic programs, with specific responsibilities including certifying participant eligibility and ensuring the safety of all student participants.
  8. Prepares all reports required by the Texas Education Agency, the Southern Association, and the Superintendent and his staff.
  9. Keeps on file a permanent record of all students who have attended his school and makes their records available to authorized agencies.
  10. Supports faculty professional development by collaborating with the Curriculum and Instruction department to plan, organize, and deliver impactful in-service programs.
  11. Submits recommendations to the superintendent concerning assignment, evaluation, promotion, and dismissal of all personnel assigned to the school unit.
  12. Selects and assigns substitute teachers from approved substitute list, and assists in their evaluation.
  13. Develops and implements a well-structured and flexible schedule allowing both students and teachers to enhance their productivity, reduce stress, and create a more positive and effective learning environment.
  14. Supervises student registrations, maintaining accurate student accounting records, including grades, attendance, suspension, and expulsion.
  15. Inspects school plant facilities periodically, submitting requisitions for supplies, maintenance and/or improvements as required.
  16. Serves as custodian for all books, technology, and property assigned to the school unit, maintaining adequate records on all such properties, establishing procedures to protect from loss or damage, other than by ordinary use of wear, and submitting requisitions for replacement and /or repair as required.
  17. Assumes responsibility for all monies collected, supervising the maintenance of all internal financial records, submitting a monthly statement of school fund accounts to the Assistant Superintendent for Business as required by School Board regulations.
  18. Cooperates with the cafeteria department in providing adequate guidance and supervision and in the administration of the department's program.
  19. Enforces the rules regarding immunizations and communicable diseases, and promotes sound health practices in the school.
  20. Provides a comfortable and safe waiting area for students arriving early during inclement weather.
  21. Serves as an extension of the Superintendent, fostering positive relationships within the school community. This includes building strong connections among students, parents, teachers, and staff, collaborating with community organizations that share educational goals, and actively encouraging participation in educational programs, PTA groups, and youth activities.
  22. Schedules and supervises the administration of all required standardized assessments.
  23. Plans and conducts an orientation program for incoming students in order to assist them in adjustment to the school program.
  24. Promotes and recognizes high standards of scholastic achievement, citizenship, and attendance.
  25. Emphasizes Americanism and patriotism by the proper display of our flags and the observance of special holidays.
  26. Helps promote and implement an effective student teaching program.
  27. Be available by phone, email, or video conferencing during regular business hours to confer with district personnel.
  28. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job responsibility unless instructed to work from home by supervisor.
  29. Assist in maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.
  30. Distance Learning and Virtual Instruction Duties and Responsibilities In the event of a school closure in response to a disaster, flood, extreme weather condition, fuel curtailment, epidemic, pandemic or other calamity, the following duties and responsibilities will be added to the above listed Major Job Responsibilities and Duties, as directed by the Superintendent.
  31. Usage of personal equipment, including but not limited to personal cellular phone, personal computer, and personal internet service when working from home during a District closure due to government or Board order or during an emergency affecting normal District operations.
  32. Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as may be assigned by supervisor. All employees are expected to comply with lawful directives.
  33. Supervisory and Appraisal Responsibilities: Assistant Principals, Teaching Staff and Paraprofessionals, Other Professional Staff, All Nonprofessional School Staff, Other Resource and Service personnel while functioning in the assigned school

Working Conditions:

Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); interpret policy, procedures, and data; coordinate campus functions; maintain emotional control under stress. Occasional district and statewide travel; frequent prolonged and irregular hours. Some bending, lifting and stooping while performing job related functions.

Distance Learning Working Conditions:

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer; use of and access to phone system; video/instructional equipment; and peripherals

Posture: Prolonged sitting

Motion: Repetitive computer work with frequent use of hands and wrists

Environment: Work from inside home or location other than school building

Terms of Employment:

Wage / Hour Status: Exempt

Minimum Salary: $88,323

Pay Grade: 8

Minimum Work Days: 224

Months: 12
