Title: Resident Engineer
Position Description
The Resident Engineer will oversee all field construction activities for a roadway improvement project, ensuring compliance with contract documents, regulatory requirements, and project objectives. This role serves as the Owner's representative, responsible for managing contractor performance, coordinating with stakeholders, and ensuring the project is delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget.
Essential Job Duties
- Act as the primary on-site liaison between the Owner, contractor, design team, and public agencies
- Provide full-time construction oversight of roadway, utility, and civil infrastructure improvements
- Monitor contractor performance to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, permits, and standards
- Review and process RFIs, submittals, change orders, and construction schedules
- Manage inspection staff and coordinate daily construction activities
- Ensure adherence to safety standards, traffic control requirements, and environmental regulations
- Track project progress, quantities, and costs; validate pay applications and recommend approvals
- Identify project risks and implement mitigation strategies to avoid delays or cost overruns
- Lead progress meetings and prepare detailed project documentation and reports
- Coordinate with local stakeholders and agencies to minimize disruption to the surrounding community Oversee construction of structural components associated with roadway improvements, including retaining walls, bridge elements, foundations, and ancillary structures
- Interpret and enforce structural plans, specifications, and calculations to ensure accurate field implementation
- Coordinate with structural engineers of record to resolve design discrepancies and respond to field conditions
- Review and approve structural submittals, shop drawings, and material specifications (e.g., rebar, concrete mix designs, structural steel)
- Monitor installation of structural elements to ensure compliance with design tolerances, load requirements, and safety standards
- Verify proper inspection and testing of structural components, including concrete pours, compaction, and reinforcement placement
- Evaluate field changes impacting structural integrity and recommend appropriate design modifications or corrective actions
- Ensure all structural work complies with applicable codes, standards, and agency requirements
Professional Experience Level/Other Quali cations
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of California
- Minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible experience in construction management, with a focus on roadway or public works projects
- Proven experience serving as a Resident Engineer or in a similar lead field role
- Strong knowledge of Caltrans, local agency, and public works construction standards
- Demonstrated experience managing contractors, inspectors, and multidisciplinary teams
- Proficiency in construction documentation, contract administration, and cost control Experience with structural elements of roadway projects such as bridges, culverts, retaining systems, and shoring
- Familiarity with Caltrans Bridge Construction Records & Procedures Manual and standard specifications
- Experience coordinating with structural design teams and reviewing structural calculations and details
- Experience with municipal roadway projects in Southern California
- Familiarity with roadway improvement projects involving traffic control and stakeholder coordination
- Experience working with agencies such as city public works departments or transportation authorities
Education/Training
- BS in Civil Engineering, Structural engineering, Construction Management or a related technical field
Compensation
- This role is salaried/exempt with a base annual salary range of $160,000.00 - $185,000.00 and commensurate with skill, education, experience, and work location.
- This role is bonus eligible after 6 months of employment.
