Join a Team That Makes a Difference Every Day!
If you're seeking more than just a job, but a rewarding career in federal law enforcement, the U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) invites you to take the first step toward becoming an entry-level Border Patrol Agent.
USBP is urgently hiring full-time, entry-level positions where your background in public safety, security, military, or law enforcement may qualify you. Become part of a dedicated team of professionals who exemplify camaraderie, pride, and a commitment to the mission of protecting our nation.
Now is the perfect time to seize this opportunity! Along with a competitive base salary, outstanding benefits, and job security, USBP is offering recruitment incentives of up to $60,000.
Salary and Benefits
The annual base salary for newly appointed BPAs ranges from $51,632 to $92,219 depending on your grade level (GL-5/GL-7). As a Border Patrol Agent, you will have access to a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, and various insurance options, paid leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, which functions similarly to a Roth 401(k).
Recruitment Incentive
Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents are eligible for up to $20,000 in recruitment incentives. The first $10,000 will be paid upon successfully completing the Border Patrol Academy. The remaining $10,000 will be awarded for accepting a prioritized location.
Retention Incentive
You may also qualify for additional retention incentives totaling up to $40,000, apportioned throughout your first four years.
Duty Locations
Please note that available duty assignments may include the Southwest Border, including prioritized locations. Remember that duty assignments are based on operational needs and may not always match your preferences.
The location of your assignment can affect pay rates, with some federal law enforcement locations offering higher locality pay. As a fully trained BPA, you could be eligible for an additional 25% of base pay through the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This is a career ladder position that offers a clear path for progression through GL-5, GL-7, GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12, with eligibility to promote to the next grade upon completing 52 weeks in each grade.
Responsibilities
As a Border Patrol Agent, you will contribute significantly to safeguarding the American public by securing our borders, preventing unlawful activities, and bolstering the nation’s economic strength. Your duties may include:
- Detecting and questioning individuals suspected of immigration violations and reviewing documents for citizenship.
- Apprehending undocumented noncitizens and smugglers by using surveillance techniques, including infrared scopes during night operations.
- Tracking evidence of illegal entries and performing checks in various environments.
- Executing patrols along international borders and coastal areas using government assets such as vehicles, horses, and ATVs.
Qualifications
To qualify for the GL-5 grade level, you will need:
- One year of general work experience demonstrating decision-making abilities, stress management, and skills in gathering information.
- Alternatively, a bachelor’s degree in any field from an accredited institution can meet this requirement.
- A combination of relevant experience and education will also be considered.
For the GL-7 grade level, you need:
- One year of specialized work experience showing your ability to exercise judgment in law enforcement contexts.
- A bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement or relevant graduate studies can substitute for experience.
- Again, a combination of experience and education can qualify you.
Other Requirements
You must be a U.S. citizen, have primary residency in the U.S. for at least three of the last five years, and be under 40 years of age at the time of application, in accordance with law enforcement retirement provisions.
