Assistant Professor of Environmental Geosciences
Westminster University in Salt Lake City, Utah, invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor of Environmental Geosciences with expertise in climate science and / or hydrology and with the ability to teach introductory coursework in GIS. This position begins in fall of 2026, and the successful candidate will be a member of the Environmental Studies Program in the College of Arts and Sciences. The typical 24-credit teaching assignment will include courses in Environmental Geoscience, Climate Science & Solutions, Introduction to GIS, an upper division course in the professor’s area of expertise, among others. We seek an excellent educator with demonstrated ability to facilitate active student engagement with experience or interest in team teaching, community engagement, field experiences, or other innovative learning designs.
The Environmental Studies program at Westminster University is an interdisciplinary program with concentrations in Society & Culture, and Environmental Sciences. We maintain a commitment to student learning outside of the classroom, and many of our courses include field components or opportunities for activism and service learning in the region. Students are engaged in research, community action, and creative activities around the Salt Lake City area and across Utah. Student learning is enhanced by robust co-curricular programming through the Outdoor Program, the Dumke Center for Civic Engagement, and ongoing collaborations with community partners such as Wasatch Community Gardens, Seven Canyons Trust, and HEAL Utah. Environmental Studies alumni are educators, activists, scholars, and entrepreneurs.
We seek candidates who demonstrate skills, experience, and potential to facilitate the learning of all students, including those historically underrepresented in higher education (such as students of color, LGBT students, students with disabilities, first-generation college students, and more). The Environmental Studies Program is strongly committed to increasing the diversity of our student body and our discipline by creating a safe and welcoming environment for all.
Minimum Qualifications
- A PhD in Environmental Geoscience or a related field (e.g. geology, hydrology, climate science, environmental science, or geography) completed no later than August 2026.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching. The successful applicant will have served as the instructor of record for multiple courses and be able to demonstrate the ability to employ pedagogical practices that generate active and engaged learning.
- A research agenda that is appropriate for a teaching-focused institution. The agenda should include opportunities for undergraduate student involvement through research supervision and mentorship, with evidence of scholarly dissemination (e.g., scientific conference presentations, peer-reviewed publications), and involvement of students in other professional activities.
