Job description

Controller / Sr. Accounting Manager

Build, Lead & Grow While Supporting Farmworker Communities, Gresham, OR

At OHDC, people are drawn to the mission, but they stay because of the culture. For nearly 50 years, OHDC has helped farmworkers and low-income families across Oregon and Northern Nevada access housing assistance, workforce development programs, education, advocacy, and critical support services. The work is meaningful, visible, and deeply connected to the communities they serve.

Just as importantly, OHDC is known for its collaborative, supportive, and family-oriented culture. Employees genuinely care about one another, step in to help when needed, and take pride in working alongside colleagues who are passionate about making a difference. Respect, inclusion, cultural humility, and service are core values that guide how people work together every day.

Their workforce reflects the diversity of the communities they serve, bringing together team members from a wide range of cultural, linguistic, and professional backgrounds. You'll join a team that values learning, encourages educational and professional growth, embraces different perspectives, and believes that strong relationships are essential to achieving their mission.

In addition to meaningful work and a supportive team environment, OHDC offers an outstanding benefits package that includes:

  • Approximately 90% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision premiums for employees and dependents
  • Four weeks of vacation upon hire
  • Eleven paid holidays annually
  • Flexible work schedules
  • Hybrid work opportunities following onboarding and training
  • 403(b) retirement plan with employer match
  • Tuition assistance and professional development support
  • Life and disability insurance
  • Flexible Spending Accounts and Health Savings Account options

This is an ideal opportunity for a Senior Accounting Manager, Accounting Manager, Assistant Controller, or Controller who wants to have a visible impact in a mission-driven organization and a meaningful runway to take on broader finance leadership.

Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Controller / Sr. Accounting Manager will oversee day-to-day accounting operations while helping strengthen internal processes, develop staff capability, improve financial reporting, and support organizational effectiveness.

The role combines technical accounting expertise with leadership, coaching, and operational improvement responsibilities.

For the right individual, the position offers close partnership with experienced finance leadership and meaningful room to contribute as the organization evolves.

Accounting & Financial Operations

  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities.
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in accordance with GAAP.
  • Oversee general ledger, reconciliations, payroll, AP/AR, and cash management activities.
  • Strengthen accounting procedures and internal controls.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
  • Support annual financial audit and Single Audit preparation in partnership with the Director of Finance.

Grant & Fund Accounting

  • Manage accounting and reporting for federal, state, local, and private grant funding.
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and funding requirements.
  • Support grant budgeting, monitoring, reporting, and financial stewardship.
  • Partner with program leadership to improve financial visibility and accountability.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a growing accounting team.
  • Provide coaching and professional development.
  • Help establish clear responsibilities, expectations, and accountability.
  • Foster collaboration and cross-functional teamwork.
  • Build bench strength through training and knowledge sharing, particularly with accounting systems (MIP).

Process Improvement & Organizational Development

  • Improve workflows and financial procedures.
  • Support ongoing efforts to centralize and standardize accounting operations.
  • Create documentation, training tools, and repeatable processes.
  • Partner with leadership to improve operational effectiveness and communication across departments.

What Success Looks Like

  • Enjoys building systems and improving processes.
  • Can bring structure while maintaining a collaborative approach.
  • Is comfortable mentoring developing team members.
  • Is well-versed in nonprofit accounting and grant compliance.
  • Communicates effectively with finance and non-finance staff alike.
  • Demonstrates cultural humility, emotional intelligence, and strong relationship-building skills.
  • Is energized by mission-driven work and organizational improvement.

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Progressive accounting experience with increasing responsibility.
  • Experience leading or supervising accounting staff.
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles.
  • Experience with grant accounting and fund accounting.
  • Experience managing month-end close and financial reporting processes.
  • Advanced Excel skills.
  • Experience with accounting systems; familiarity with MIP is a plus.

What OHDC Would Love

  • Bilingual English/Spanish.
  • Experience supporting federally funded programs.
  • Experience in community-based or mission-driven organizations.
  • Experience improving accounting systems, procedures, and internal controls.

Compensation

Salary Range: $100,000-$120,000 with outstanding benefits including 90% paid medical for employee and dependents, flexible/hybrid work, 4 weeks of vacation, educational support, and strong leadership growth potential.

If you believe strong financial leadership can help strengthen communities and improve lives, we'd love to hear from you.
