Job description

Reserve Firefighter

Under the supervision of the Fire Captain, the Reserve Firefighter accomplishes a variety of duties in the protection of life and property. Participates in the combating, extinguishing and prevention of fires as well as providing emergency medical care, rescue and protection of individuals from hazardous environments. Maintains fire station, grounds, and equipment, participates in fire prevention inspection, fire prevention, and suppression training.

Essential duties and responsibilities include :

  • Providing courteous and expeditious customer service
  • Responding to fire alarms, medical emergencies, hazardous materials situations and other emergency / non-emergency calls
  • Performing all firefighter duties; laying and connecting hoses, directing water streams in the control and extinguishing of fires in structures, brush and grass; using forcible entry tools, bars, hooks, ladders, extinguishers and other equipment
  • Raising and climbing ladders, ventilating structures, accomplishing salvage operations
  • Administering emergency medical care to treat patients; performing Basic Life Support (BLS); assisting paramedics with Advance Life Support (ALS)
  • Operating a two-way radio to communicate with the communications center
  • Participating in fire prevention programs and inspections to enforce fire prevention codes and ordinances
  • Performing other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department

Education, experience and qualifications include :

  • Must be an eligible member of the Tribal Community
  • Knowledge of fire suppression and prevention, emergency medical care, operation and maintenance of firefighting equipment, safety practices and precautions pertaining to emergency services
  • Ability to learn local streets, fire alarms, fire hydrants, public and local government buildings, and local hazards
  • Read and understand departmental policies, rules, regulations and instructions to include fire prevention & suppression literature and emergency medical care instructions
  • Communicate clearly and concisely in English, both orally and in writing
  • Basic knowledge of computers and programs to include MS Office, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Able to commit to a minimum of 24 hours per month to station coverage as well as 8 hours of training per month at the fire station
  • Environmental safety and housekeeping standards
  • Licenses, certifications and registrations include :

  • EMR / EMT-I (Must be valid in State of California)
  • Current AHA CPR Healthcare Provider or equivalent
  • Hazardous Materials First Responder Operational (CSTI or equivalent)
  • ICS 100-Introduction to ICS, ICS 200-Basic ICS
  • IS 700 NIMS : An Introduction
  • Complete Minimum training hours (226 hours) to be certified as a Reserve Firefighter
  • Fire Control III and Fire Control VII (Preferred)
  • S 190
  • One (1) year experience as a fire fighter (Career, Volunteer, or PCF)
  • Authorized Driver : Role requires operation or driving of Tribe-owned vehicles or driving patron vehicles. A valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record as determined by the insurance carrier is required.
  • Physical requirements and working conditions include :

  • Work indoors and out in a variety of environmental conditions, including exposure to extreme heat, smoke, fumes, odors, vibrations, loud noises, hazardous materials, and noxious gases
  • Work requires travel to attend meetings, trade shows, and conferences
  • Incumbents may be required to work evening, weekend and holiday shifts
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced, high-demand environment
  • Strength sufficient to exert up to 200 pounds of force occasionally and / or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects and / or move up to 200 pounds occasionally
  • Climb up and down ladders of up to 105 feet and work at considerable heights (commercial roof tops)
  • Sedentary work : involves operating a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer
  • Physical activities that apply to the essential functions of the position are balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
  • Hearing sufficient to hear conversational levels in person, via videoconference and over the telephone
  • Speech sufficient to make oneself heard and understood in person, in front of groups, in meetings, via videoconference and over the telephone
  • Visual acuity that meets the requirements of the position : The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; expansive reading and visual inspection of employees, visitors or facility
  • Mobility sufficient to safely move in an office environment, walk, stoop, bend and kneel, and enter, exit and operate a motor vehicle in the course of travel to promotional events, meetings, conferences, trade shows and San Manuel properties
  • Endurance sufficient to sit, walk and stand for extended periods, and maintain efficiency throughout the entire work shift and during extended work hours
  • The employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles including secondhand smoke
  • Must successfully complete the Wildland Work Capacity Test "Pack Test" at arduous level
  • Perform strenuous and hazardous tasks under emergency conditions
  • Work in tightly enclosed spaces with poor ventilation
  • Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus
  • Detect color changes in smoke and flames
  • Reasonable accommodation will be made in compliance with all applicable law
