Duties and Responsibilities

• Assume all duties of the Classroom Teacher in their absence, complying with all school rules, policies and procedures
• Manage the classroom and provide instruction according to the plans prepared by the Classroom Teacher, developing and implementing appropriate programming to meet the students' needs as necessary
• Create and maintain a positive and safe environment that promotes active learning while keeping consistent with the health, medical and safety concerns of each student
• Work directly with students to help reinforce learning objectives
• Record & report behavioral data on students as needed
• Provide documentation regarding student instructional concerns and progress to the Classroom Teacher as needed
• Document medical needs as per student plans, informing the nurses and other appropriate personnel when needed
• Supervise Teacher Aides, volunteers and other non-professional personnel who may participate in the assigned classroom, addressing complaints and resolving problems as needed including providing discipline if required
• Carry out all educational and therapeutic programs including lifting, moving and positioning of students
• Ensure that the Principal or designee and the assigned Social Worker are notified of any issues / concerns relative to students and / or their families
• Document performance of staff and share with the Classroom Teacher, informing the Principal or Vice Principal of an urgent issues as needed
• Participate in various teacher-related meetings and in-service sessions as assigned
• All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
• 6 months of related experience and / or training
• Ability to read, write, speak and understand English including interpreting documents such as safety rules, policy and procedure manuals and governmental regulations
