Under the direction of a Senior Engineering Geologist or Engineering Geologist, the Transportation Engineering Technician (TET) will perform field and office work in support of geophysical and engineering geology studies. In this capacity, the TET will assist in field mapping, geophysical studies, maintenance, and calibration of geophysical equipment, implements solutions for technical testing problems, and work either as part of a team or independently as necessary to conduct field testing. The incumbent will receive general instructions for each assignment and detailed instructions regarding procedure or methodology for specific assignments as required. May be required to act independently in performing certain tests.

For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and / or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions
Position located in Sacramento, Sacramento County.
While at their base of operation and unless otherwise required, employee will work day shift in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting. Field investigations will require travel to remote locations, where employee will work outdoors and will be exposed to dirt, uneven surfaces, extreme temperatures, noise, vibration, and odor associated with fieldwork. Incumbent will work within lane closures adjacent to moving traffic. Incumbent will work around bulky / heavy materials and equipment in construction zones. Incumbent will work overtime and at night as project schedule demands. Incumbent may be given temporary assignments on other projects throughout the State as workload demands.
This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans's current telework policy. While Caltrans supports telework, in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksite with minimal notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate may be required to conduct business travel on behalf of the Department or commute to the headquartered location. Business travel reimbursements considers an employee's designated Headquarters Location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
New toState candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification orminimum of alternate range when applicable.

Possession of a valid driver’s licenseis required when operating a State owned or leased vehicle.
