Janelia Research Campus is a pioneering research center in Ashburn, Virginia, where scientists pursue fundamental questions in the life sciences.
Our integrated teams of biologists, computational scientists, and tool-builders innovate research practices and technologies to solve biology’s deepest mysteries.
HHMI launched Janelia in 2006, establishing an intellectually enriching environment for scientists to do creative, collaborative, hands-on work.

About the Internship roles :
We are looking for two summer interns to join us on a 10-12 week assignment where they will support the progress of architectural projects at both our Headquarters office and our Janelia Research Campus and assist the Facilities, Safety, and Security team with those efforts.
This internship will provide an excellent opportunity for interested architecture students who wish to further their understanding of space planning, concept planning, and design exploration in a real-world environment.

Opportunity to work on-site and work on projects at the Landscape Building of , designed by world-renowned architect
Working with a collaborative, dedicated, and impactful team
A hybrid schedule with 1 day working on-site at our Chevy Chase headquarters campus, 2 days working on-site at Janelia, and 2 days working remote
What you’ll be doing :
Gaining hands-on experience with many aspects of space planning, concept planning, and design exploration
Assisting with project management of capital projects occurring on both campuses including the expansion of the Science building
Shadowing project managers and collaborating with architects, engineers, construction contractors, and other key team members
What you bring :
An in-progress graduate degree (Master’s) in Architecture is required.
Digital copy (PDF, max. 10 MB) of student’s design work / portfolio submission is required.
Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp is preferred.
Previous experience at an architecture, engineering, or construction firm is preferred.
Strong initiative, self-motivation, and capacity for creative problem-solving.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Strong research and analytical skills.
Eagerness to learn, grow, and be mentored.
Organizational skills, interpersonal skills, and time management skills.
Attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy.
This position will be compensated at a rate of $25.00 per hour, assuming a 40-hour work week.
Physical Requirements
- Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s);
- dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters;
