AFRICAN AMERICAN OUTREACH AND EVENT COORDINATOR

Full-Time Position Available

The African American Family Outreach Program (AAFOP) represents an innovative approach to reaching African American family caregivers of those experiencing mental illness and / or substance abuse disorder.

AAFOP provides educational workshops, advocacy, and peer support to family caregivers. What makes AAFOP unique is that our Steering Committee and staff are all family caregivers for loved ones living with mental health conditions / serious mental illness.

The Outreach and Event Coordinator will work with a volunteer steering committee to spread the word about mental health resources available to the African American community.

The Mental Health Association of Alameda County (MHAAC) is a well-established non-profit organization with long term staff that assists and advocates for people with mental illness and their family members through programs including the Family Education and Resource Center (FERC), the Family Partnership Program (FPP), and Patients' Rights Advocacy (PRA).

Together, these programs assist thousands of people with serious mental illness and their family members every year. We envision a world without stigma where people with mental health challenges and their family members are free to live their best lives.

MHAAC's current budget is around $5 million.

The Outreach and Event Coordinator (OEC) works with the African American Family Outreach Project (AAFOP) Steering Committee to produce Saturday workshops and evening events.

The Coordinator will also conduct outreach to the Alameda County based African American community in a variety of ways including working with community based organizations, working with faith-based organizations, tabling at community events and conducting social media campaigns.

Collectively, these activities provide community members with information about mental illness, assist caregivers in identifying local resources and services and support family members as they navigate through Alameda County's Behavioral Health system.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES :

Under the supervision and guidance of the AAFOP Program Director, the African American Outreach and Event Coordinator's duties may include, but are not limited to the following :

Works with the volunteer AAFOP Steering Committee to schedule, plan, execute and review five Saturday events and five evening events per year for African American families.

Events will be held both virtually and in-person.

  • Assists Program Director with recruitment of speakers as directed by the Steering Committee
  • Assists the Program Director with post workshop tasks inclusive of thank you notes to speakers and evaluation summaries
  • Maintains database of program participants
  • Provides back-up support to AAFOP Case Manager and Warmline Operator, including assistance with the African Family Support Group
  • Designs and executes high quality educational materials and outreach events

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Knowledge of African American history and culture
  • Must live in Alameda County and be a member of the community served
  • Have proficiency in Microsoft Office - Outlook (email), Word (documents), Excel (spreadsheets), PowerPoint (presentations), and Teams (collaborative work)
  • Event Planning Experience - 1 year (experience may be paid or unpaid)
  • Social Media Experience - 1 year (experience may be paid or unpaid)
  • Community Outreach Experience - 1 year (experience may be paid or unpaid)
  • Proactive networking - must be able to quickly build and maintain relationships with diverse populations, e.g. community leaders, mental health service providers, family members and consumers of mental health services
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have a motor vehicle available for daily use, possess a valid California driver's license, carry vehicle liability insurance, and have an acceptable motor vehicle report, as determined by MHAAC's insurance broker
  • Must be able to provide proof of full Covid-19 vaccination and proof of booster shots (including booster for the Omicron-Eris variant), if eligible
  • Must successfully pass a fingerprint background check by CADOJ and the FBI

ADDITIONAL DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Lived experience as a family caregiver of a loved one who has a mental health challenge or serious mental illness; education and professional experience do NOT replace the personal lived experience that is required
  • Basic understanding of Serious Mental Illness (SMI)
  • Experience assisting others in navigating the Alameda County Behavioral Health (ACBH) care system
  • Experience working in a non-profit environment
  • Experience using video-based platforms such as Zoom

HOURS OF WORK : Tuesday - Saturday, 12 noon to 8 pm.

WORK LOCATION : 7677 Oakport St., Oakland, CA 94621 Office in the Coliseum Industrial neighborhood of Oakland in a premier building that includes free parking and an onsite gym.

COVID CONSIDERATIONS : All staff are required to show proof of full Covid-19 vaccination and booster shots. All staff wear masks in the office.

SALARY : $26.50 per hour (approximately $55,120 annually). Eligible for first pay increase after successful completion of three-month introductory period.
